I really didn’t think it was possible, but as a long time lurker who just created an account I have to ask…why is the Fediverse even more Draconian with bans and moderation than Reddit?
Even slightly right of center will get you banned and ostracized. Why is it so hard to find a non left leaning place on the Internet? ANY challenge to prevailing orthodoxy to the dogmatic views of leftism will have you cast to the Hinterlands.
Why is it like this?
Some examples might be…if someone were to say (not me of course great overlords!)
“You know I am not sure socially or transitioning children via pharmaceuticals is that great”
Or
“You know I kind of feel Israel has a right to defend itself ya know?”
BAN! BAN YOU F****! Say the mods.
If those topics are off limits why does the opposing view get spammed non stop? As long as I am Anti Trump, anti Religion, Anti Israel, Ani Biology…I’m good ya know?
But the MOMENT I say something that even SMELLS like an opposing view from the leftist religion?
BAN!
Even posting a Fox News article in the News areas will get your post removed…with a ban of course.
What kind of stupid s*** is this? Is the Fediverse just a safe space for leftists because of what happened to Twitter?
I’m right-of-center. I’ve never been banned or even faced mod action on lemmy, even on hexbear, beehaw, and .ml. Maybe that’s because I avoid political discussion communities. Or maybe it’s because I’m not a combative asshole.
Both your examples are ridiculous strawmen, by the way.
Hi. I thought I was alone!
Do you not understand the fediverse is decentralized? Your question makes no sense.
And even if it did, we cannot answer because we don’t know what really happened, we haven’t seen your comments or posts.
So if you can show us, do. Your mod log shows exactly one ban from one community. Is that what got your knickers in a twist? Oh yeah, your account is just 7h old at this point.
Even posting a Fox News article in the News areas will get your post removed
Now that is just funny. Let me parse it down: Fox is not “News”, it’s entertainment. And since that distinction is lost on 99% of its audience, it’s also disinformation.
Personally I’d love for you to stay and learn to become a better person. But that’s just naive.
> transitioning children via pharmaceuticals is that great
Good thing it doesn’t happen then hey?
But still, people want to “just talk about it” as if it does.
And you know, when you’re the target of endless bullshit and lies spread about you, so much so that people who don’t know any better parrot and perpetuate the bullshit, whilst crying out how hard done by they are when people push back against them for repeating the harmful bullshit they don’t understand… You know, when that happens enough, you kinda get sick of it…
You say: “…prevailing orthodoxy to the dogmatic views of leftism…”
Most on Fediverse say: Just respect difference and don’t tolerate intolerance.
By the way, it’s OK to swear. Some examples might be: “You seem to be making a ham-fisted attempt to troll people. Stop being a cunt.”
Swearing is fine. Misogynistic slurs are not.
I’m assuming you’re American? If so you should be aware that word doesn’t carry he same baggage elsewhere in the world.
It’s the #1 swearword in Finland, too.
I wonder if the other person would have objected if you’d used “dick” instead.
It’s a part of the female body used as an insult. Tell me again how it’s not misogynistic?
Outside of the US, that meaning fell away and/or changed in some places quite sometime ago. I know it’s difficult for a certain type of American to envisage a world outside of their own borders but believe it or not, it does exist and even has different cultural language evolutions.
Uh huh. “I’m used to it and I don’t want to change” is such a tired excuse.
I really don’t mind discussing this with you, but please at least make an effort to have your statements make some kind of sense. Just try and envisage the possibility that outside of the US the same or similar words have always had, or have evolved to have, different or alternative meanings. The people where I live who still interpret the word in the same way you insist is the only possible interpretation are of an older generation. Its in pretty common use by all genders in younger generations.
Also, if you ever get around to getting a passport (a document that lets you travel to other countries), you might want to leave Australia, the UK and Ireland in particular out of any travel plans you have.
This is not like “fag” in the UK meaning cigarette, a word evolving into two separate meanings only one of which is a slur.
You describe in your own comments that the word is considered a swearword, and that older generations still consider it that way. If I’ve misunderstood this so far, please correct me. That in mind, I don’t feel particularly out of line venturing that it’s still used to refer crudely to a woman’s vagina. Correct so far? And it’s also still used as an insult, albeit often a friendly one? Again, correct me if I’m wrong.

Fox News is not acknowledged as a news channel outside USA. In fact it would be illegal to call it a news channel in mostly any other “western” country. You might as well post stories from the Onion and call it news.

I’m not here to suffer fools.
And bans come cheap because they’re on an instance level. Go out and find yourself a place where you belong. If it turns out the people you’d like to talk to don’t like you back, maybe recalibrate.
OP seems like he’d be happier at truth social tbh
That you call trans folk’s situation “anti-biology” shows more of your hand than you seem willing to admit.
Maybe you belong on reddit? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
"I left this gigantic capitalist American monolith and the alternative I found was full of leftists! "
Well, duh.
(Obligatory fuck tankies.)
Imagine you and your friends are sitting around discussing chess, and somebody comes over and says:
“Chess is fucking stupid, why aren’t you playing tic tac toe? Why does this one look like a horse? They should make all the pieces move the same so I can remember how to play! Why is the queen the best piece? That seems sexist. The best strategy is to get both your bishops on the black squares. I LOVE it when corporate forces censor legal free speech!”
How does one even bring someone that ignorant of the topic into the conversation? Sure. There’s always the possibility of taking the time to slowly explain the rules of chess and address those questions and statements, but 80% of the time, the only response to that will be “Nuh uh. That’s stupid. The horsey should start in the corners”.
No. It’s just much easier to shoo them away and hope they find a sandbox to play in.
Premise rejected.
More and more often this is what it comes down to, for me too.
Why is Fediverse moderation, even more Draconian than Reddit?
No central oversight. Reddit can theoretically remove the worst of the worst, but the same doesn’t apply on the fediverse. Not across instances at least. Theoretically that lack of control is why we have defederation, but no one is going to defederate over some mods being extra draconian.
As for why it’s even at a similar level to Reddit in the first place, it’s because despite the fediverse’s superiority complex, moderation on Reddit is organic, and so it is here. It’s not like Reddit tells them to be the way they are, moderators choose to be that way. And there’s no reason why they would choose to be different on the fediverse.
I think it’s worth remembering that people who seek the power of authority aren’t usually the best people. I’m not saying this applies to all moderators, but those that become moderators for the power it gives them aren’t going to be friends, no matter which platform they’re on. It’s not like the platform makes them bad, it just enables them by giving them the power.
Why is it so hard to find a non left leaning place on the Internet?
There ARE right wing Lemmy instances. They’re just usually defederated by the ones leaning left. There’s also /r/conservative on Reddit.
“You know I kind of feel Israel has a right to defend itself ya know?”
This one is definitely a big problem imo. Like, I’m not in the pro-Israel camp, but I think it’s clear this side of the fediverse is currently an echo chamber that isn’t welcoming to opposing voices, especially on that topic. But also in regards to others like AI.
Reddit is a lot better in that regard. I think there is a point to fighting disinformation and bad faith actors, but that’s not reasoning if you then allow one side’s disinformation (like the whole “AI is completely useless” narrative which is just factually false, it’s being abused for tasks it’s wildly unsuited for, but that doesn’t make it useless for what it’s designed to do) or tolerate complete faith into your side’s propaganda.
Imo this is a big barrier to the fediverse currently. I can’t in good faith recommend the fediverse to people whom I know to be right-leaning, because I know they’re going to have a bad time here.
Even posting a Fox News article in the News areas will get your post removed…with a ban of course.
I do think a ban is excessive unless you’re a repeat offender, but… it makes sense to ban articles from a self-proclaimed entertainment network which only idiots would take as news (Fox News’s official position as argued in court, not my opinion) from a News community.
I agree with the sentiment but despite the vast amount of pushback and downvotes I get for voicing certain views it’s extremely rare for me to have my comments removed let alone be banned. Some individual communities might be worse than others and .ml communities you should avoid like the plague anyway but broadly speaking I’d still claim that it’s pretty difficult to get mods to take action against you as long as you’re being polite.
Oh yeah, it seems like half the posts I made on reddit in the end were shadow deleted, and I’m not even sure what I did wrong. Just automatic and instant action from Reddit. At least here when your shit is deleted you know about it.
Even slightly right of center will get you banned and ostracized
Sligthly right of center views are more saying that private sector may play a role in healthcare, or that private school are OK. Thinking that children shall not get healthcare or suporting war-crime isn’t slighthly off centered
Did you get banned from tankie communities? Because that’s ridiculously easy. Those people are fucking crazy.
Don’t fret it. View it as social Darwinism: whichever communities banned you for posting what you thought were reasonable comments, you probably don’t want to partake in anyway.
Which is sad when I want to upvote content but get text im banned arbitrarily so i just move on.
The solution is: when you get banned for no good reason, block the community - or the entire instance in extreme cases of craziness like Hexbear or Lemmygrad. Then it disappears from your Lemmy experience entirely and you never need be frustrated ever again.
Agree but it seems there is a master list because im banned on places I never comment on. So I keep blocking.
Probably some tankie administrator of one community read your comment in another and decided to preemptively ban you. I’m banned from multiple tankie communities I’ve never even set foot in myself. Not that I care 🙂
