African Union has proposed a resolution to UN to replace the Mercator map with Equal Earth map, which represents countries’ sizes more accurately.

The resolution passed with 164 in favor, 1 against, 6 abstained.
One of the countries that abstained is Ukraine, as the proposed map had Crimea marked as neutral territory.

Huh, I didn’t even notice that.
Weird, considering the UN officially recognizes all of Ukraine as… Ukraine.
Also weird that, knowing this, Ukraine abstained and not voted against. Although this is probably because politics and international affairs.
IMO marking Crimea as neutral makes zero sense in what otherwise would be a great map suggestion, and it really pisses me off.
Either show the actual control status on the ground: which would mean 80% of Ukraine marked as Ukrainian, 20% of Ukraine as Russian.
Or show 100% of it all as Ukrainian, as it’s agreed upon internationally.
Showing entire Ukraine as Ukrainian except for “neutral” Crimea doesn’t match reality neither legally nor militarily.
Such a map has a lifetime of barely 24h.
I don’t know about that. The frontline has barely moved in the last 2-3 years or so.
Especially if we zoom out and look at the world map, small towns changing hands wouldn’t be visible on a map of that scale
We underscore that the resolution neither addresses nor affects questions relating to sovereignty, territorial status, delimitation, or the internationally recognized borders of States.
So why other countries didn’t get the same treatment?
UN doing useless shit as usual, like there are a number of institutions that are good, but as an entity it’s worthless.
UN should be fucking dismantled after financing hamas
You want the UN to finance Hamas then be dismantled? That seems unnecessarily complicated.
Hahahaha holy crap, that’s one hell of a statement. Would you care to substantiate it any?
It’s a pretty terrible map.
Skew is still too high in the north and south, I get the “true size of africa” argument (yes I watched that West Wing episode — it’s fine to replace maps used for maritime navigation, but I don’t like this projection either.
I only really support globes and local projections.
It is indeed bad and inaccurate.
I bet they only chose it because it looked similar enough to Mercator, unlike Dymaxion or other options.
People really hate change, friction, and doing something in a new way, even as small as using a different map.
So they settled for Equal Earth map as a compromise, because it’s a slight incremental improvement over Mercator, rather than a fully new thing.
Still prefer the waterman-butterfly projection
Isn’t Dymaxion map projection even more accurate than Waterman-butterfly?
Yes but it wasn’t recently voted on in the UN (that I know of). Plus the dymaxian projection isn’t as satisfying to look at
A political decision through and through. Two regions of Georgia are still controlled by Russia but didn’t get the same treatment.
