To be clear, the flight was canceled because it was late at night and the airport closed at 12:30AM. Ordinarily they would have taken the kid off, arrested them, and continued with takeoff.

Seriously, just toss the little shit into the seat and buckle them up. Why is this so difficult for some parents to do? Kids weigh next to nothing; just pick them up and force them to comply.

Edit: Downvoted by two six bad parents who are afraid to control their children.

They can tie down unruly adult passengers before they’re arrested, but they can’t restrain a kid climbing over seats?

I think if I had done something like that and refused to listen I might have ended up with all 4 limbs broken. That’s probably not the best way to deal with the situation either, but surely there’s some level of middle ground.

i swear sometimes you can just ‘see’ through their behaviour the adults who were never disciplined at all and were allowed to do everything with abandon. Everything - including completely cancelling a flight of 150 passengers and being told its not their fault when it clearly was…

Every time I did something like this my parents ensured that I ‘eventually obeyed’ . And YES they did go overboard most of the time in most of these situations cause they are not the best of parents , sadly. But you have to find the middle ground when youre dealing with children in situatiins like these. Tell the kid:

“You enjoy when we fly out to see aunty right?” The kid: “well…yeah.” “OK! So you have 3 options. Either stay in your seat and be quiet until the end of the flight, Ill duct tape you to the seat to ensure you dont move anywhere, or Ill take both of us off this flight right now and youll never get to see ANYONE for the next 3 years cause youll be grounded for the next 3 years…Pick Now!”

Theres a notable amount of situations where a child / teen will not learn anything until you or even society forces them to learn something. People get mad when we convict some people to life in prison without parole but there are some so thoroughly-incorrectly-raised adult-children out hrre who you HAVE to give a life sentence cause it would take them no less thsn 100 years to learn the lesson(s) they need to learn.

“Police your chidren…or the world will.”

“Are you sitting down or am I putting you in your seat? If you don’t choose, I will put you in your seat”.

Follow through in 5 seconds, problem fixed. The kid might cry, but oh well. No need to be rough or scream.

If my offspring is being such a demon that we can’t stay on the plane, I guess the trip’s cancelled.

Of course since mine is currently a hyperactive 2 year old, we’re just not going on any flights any time soon. In a few years if things haven’t gotten better, I’ll have the lil’ demon checked for ADHD as I have it myself, just lucky enough to be inattentive rather than hyperactive myself.

So far I’ve gotten through all this hell without any physical punishment whatsoever by 1) avoiding situations where said demon spawn has opportunities to be an even bigger demon (hence no flights), 2) being very clear about what “no” and “stop” mean and 3) making good use of a more stern voice when something’s wrong, to the point that a stern “no” is met with pouting and acceptance rather than protest most of the time. Also most of the time I do say no, I also explain why something shouldn’t be done. It’s pretty damn difficult being a single parent of a barely verbal sonic the hedgehog and I’m sure my methods are far from perfect, but I’m just hoping that I get more things right than wrong.

I also think that boy’s parents have no excuse. I’ve gotten my kid to behave fairly well compared to a year ago, I’m still not going on a plane any time soon. That boy is at least a few years older. You know your kid’s personality by that time for sure. If you know it’s going to be hell, then just don’t fly with him unless it’s an absolute necessity (which it rarely is).

Some people just don’t discipline their kids at all. All 3 of my friends kids were fucking monsters until they got to be like 11 or 12. Anytime they were told no it would turn into an immediate tantrum until they folded and gave the kid at least part of what they wanted. I never saw them without their parents around but I heard their grandparents make comments about how they didn’t act like that when they had them because it didn’t work. Their mother also would get pissed off if anyone else told them to stop doing something bad or declined to give them something they wanted “because they’re autistic” which as far as I know they were never diagnosed and I never saw any other signs of.

Remember the only qualification to become a parent is functional gonads. No education, training, or proof of competency and aptitude is required.

Which is why shit parents often resort to physically assaulting their children. It’s because the are too ignorant of actual parenting techniques and methods to know otherwise.

“My parents spanked me and I turned out fine”…

No you fucking idiot, you did not turn out fine. You are beating a helpless child because you don’t know shit about parenting.

when people tell me about all the shitty parents out here I cant help but remember this:

“Now, there’s one thing you might have noticed I don’t complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don’t fall out of the sky. They don’t pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It’s what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you’re going to get selfish, ignorant leaders. Term limits ain’t going to do any good; you’re just going to end up with a brand new bunch of selfish, ignorant Americans. So, maybe, maybe, maybe, it’s not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here… like, the public. Yeah, the public sucks. There’s a nice campaign slogan for somebody: ‘The Public Sucks. F*ck Hope.’” – George Carlin

This is the single best argument for abortion. If the idiots of the world cannot be trusted to have children, we should let them get rid of them before they become everyone’s problem without question.

The airline said both the child’s accompanying parent and flight crew tried to resolve the situation but were “unsuccessful.”

While you are likely right, we don’t know anything about the family. If the child had special needs it may have just been a bad day for all involved.

There’s a certain level of disability that simply makes one unable to fly on a plane. If you’re an adult and so detached from the reality that you think the flight attendant is trying to eat your soul, and so you need to stab her? Yeah, you shouldn’t be on a plane, disability inclusiveness be damned. If the kid has such profound special needs that he simply cannot sit in a chair on a plane without creating a safety hazard for the whole aircraft? He should not be on a plane, inclusivity be damned.

It’s one thing if the kid has Tourette’s and isn’t doing anything except annoying some people. But when it comes to issues of physical safety, disability inclusion takes a back seat.

      They were.

Porter said the aircraft returned to the terminal, where the passengers (as in the kid and the accompanying parent) were asked to leave the plane and their baggage was removed. The airline said the additional time required to complete those steps and refile the flight plan meant the flight could not depart before Victoria International Airport’s (YYJ) runway closed at 12:30 a.m. As a result, the flight was cancelled.

In the end, there are some pretty large questions:

    1. How much did this cost (presumably) the airline?
    2. Who pays?
    3. Are the culprits (mother & son) on a no-fly list now?

If the answer to # 2 is us through elevated ticket prices then it’s a problem. It either takes a village to raise a child and pay for their mistakes therefore societal norms are individually enforceable, or, it is exclusively the parents responsibility to raise the child and pay for the mistakes. It must be one or the other, there is no in-between.

You talk to them. You tell them what’s going down. You give them details. Children are not animals. They can listen, understand, speak, hold a conversation. If you need them to do something specific, in a certain time frame, for a certain reason, you tell them.

I feel like people underestimate the mental faculties of kids all the time. If you treat them with respect and just talk to them, you usually don’t have to resort to abuse tactics.

But the original question is “what options do I have aside from abusing my kid?”, and while “just talk to them” is an oversimplified answer, I feel it’s an appropriate response to such a thickheaded question.

Kids are smart. But they don’t always have the same thought process as adults. There have to be consequences for actions. And a stern talking to just isn’t going to cut it for a lot of kids.

Punishments like spanking give an immediate reinforcement and I wouldn’t consider that abuse.

Different situations require different ways to handle kids. On an airplane where the kid won’t sit still, I would certainly consider something immediate that doesn’t need a lengthy explanation.

Usually yes, and I will acknowledge that skipping this step is showing laziness or incompetence, but I don’t think children are already reasonable, especially when they’re tired (this happened late in the evening) and already committed to throwing a tantrum. And in this case the whole situation might have been already stressful for the parents anyway, which doesn’t help. Probably they should have talked about it more way before they entered the plane, and prepared the kid for what was going to happen. And maybe they did. But the situation then being what it is I think options can be very limited, and there probably wasn’t much time to try reasoning with the kid

It is a parenting issue, not a child issue. You don’t harm a child just because you’re pressed for time. You learn how to communicate the urgency, you learn how to distract, you teach them about action and consequence. This kids parents apparently were not having a good day and to a certain degree I empathize with them, but they shouldn’t have been in that situation to begin with if they just worked with their kid.
