Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some unique things that sucks about getting old?
36·2 天前Doors close and options narrow. The way you think about the future fundamentally changes.
You have to remember not to project your decline onto culture, society, and the world. You have to remember that many, many things are better now than when you were young.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you record your own voicemail greeting or do you just use whatever default thing your carrier does? If you do, do you make it funny or something?
4·2 天前Hi, you’ve reached my voicemail. At the tone, please hang up and send me a text.

1120·2 天前Y’all realize that the Odyssey is fiction, right? Are you going to be upset if the Charybdis isn’t period accurate? What about the 6headed dragon? Look too much like Tiamat?
This is reddit level media criticism. Mindless contrarianism over focused on trivial details. At least we’re not arguing over the race/gender of the cast.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump's 'Donroe Doctrine' seeks influence over Western Hemisphere citing old US policy
3·3 天前The Monroe Doctrine was a 19th and 20th century through-line where America intervened militarily in Mexico and South America.
The biggest difference between then and now is that the Monroe Doctrine was supposed be the US ‘protecting’ this hemisphere from European Colonialism, and Trump hasn’t bothered to lie about his motivation.
This was, is, and always will be an American colonial project.

World News@lemmy.world•Trump suggests US taxpayers could reimburse oil firms for Venezuela investmentEnglish
131·3 天前The oil companies don’t want to invest because in 10y when production recovers, who knows what oil prices will be? Even if they could pump it out tomorrow, Oil is cheap, and driving it down would bankrupt American oil production.
The logic of “addiction to foreign oil” is outdated. America is an energy exporter.

World News@lemmy.world•Trump claims US oil firms could be 'up and running' in Venezuela within 18 monthsEnglish
17·3 天前The problem is that the oil companies don’t want to. The real timeline for actually producing oil is like ~10y. And who knows what demand will be in 10y. Even if they could magically transport it out of the ground tomorrow, oil is already cheap and pushing it down would bankrupt half of Texas.
America is an energy exporter, the days of “addiction to foreign oil” don’t apply anymore.

World News@lemmy.world•Trump’s Cargo Cult Imperialism in Venezuela | Stealing their oil is lunacy, but that won’t stop him from trying.English
3·3 天前This special military operation has been compared to Russia for obvious reasons. But one not obvious thing they have in common is the resource plunder is a bad deal for the conquerors. By the time Putin could tap Ukraine’s coal reserves or Trump Venezuela’s oil, there is an excellent chance these resources will be worth much less than today.
Many people have touted the leverage Venezuelan production could have on Moscow or Tehran. But they always leave out that this would hurt Houston just as much.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Should there be something that installs Linux to disk directly from Windows?
2·3 天前This might not be feasible. IDK how you could install a whole OS, inside of another, without looking like a serious virus or malware. There are many files that cannot be changed while Windows is running (why it needs to reboot so often for updates). And no sane OS is going to let a program edit things like the MBR.

7·3 天前I know people who are proud that they don’t wash their hands, their ass, or their feet. Knew a girl from HS who dumped a dude because he never wiped his ass. And it wasn’t because his family had a bidet.
Everybody forgets this. The time when “a single income could provide housing, transportation, and collage for a family of four” only existed for white men. Thinking this was universal is just lefty false nostalgia nauseatingly similar to MAGA.

21·4 天前Some of the first real home/office PCs had only one floppy drive and 640kb of RAM. Fancier machines had a second floppy. If you were a millionaire, you could get a HDD with upwards of 30Mb storage.

I like Einstein and Socialism! But Einstein’s opinion on politics, while interesting, carries no special weight. On matters of mathematics and physics Einstein carries the authority of his knowledge. On matters of politics he’s just another dude.
