I had a similar experience with OOT, never owned an N64 but finally played it 2 years ago on PC. IMO the gameplay just isn’t very good by today’s standards, yet it was very innovative for its time. Some of my friends who played it in the 90s when they were young still love that game.

As others have said, I too think the golden era of video games is now. Games are getting better and better and there has never been a bigger selection of games to play than right now. There have never been as many people enjoying video games than right now. That being said, I don’t play as much as I used to, but that’s mostly because I’ve been getting older and working in video games for almost 20 years I’ve been a bit overexposed to the medium.

When I was studying computer science I had a dual-boot setup on my laptop. I was never happy with a VM but it’s not a lot of work to set up so you could try that first! With dual-boot I could still use Windows if I absolutely needed it for a course. I can recommend the Arch Linux wiki, it has many articles and tutorials. It’s only really useful if you are using Arch Linux or a distro based on Arch, e.g. EndeavourOS

The downside is, you will be spending a lot of time customizing your Linux and fixing problems. This can be very rewarding and a great learning experience but it also takes time and effort. If you want to spend less time with your computer and more time talking to people offline or enjoying nature, installing Linux can be a bad idea.

I would argue that people you are describing enjoying Tik Tok and being too lazy to look stuff up themselves, are not really engineers. You could also frame it as, information technology got so mainstream, even people with no technical background whatsoever are part of it. Engineers and tech nerds still exist, but they are a minority now.

Oje, deutsche Synchronsprecher sind da noch ein Thema für sich. Bei US-amerikanischen Sitcoms sind die deutschen Sprecher für mich auch manchmal schwer zu ertragen.

Das sehe ich auch als ein großes Problem. Oft kriegen die Übersetzer ein Spreadsheet mit den ganzen Texten und übersetzen das direkt in diesem Dokument. Wenn die das auch noch im Detail im Spiel anschauen/testen müssen, ist das vergleichsweise sehr teuer und zeitaufwändig.

Das mit Dungeons of Hinterberg wusste ich nicht, ist aber sehr interessant! Ich habe noch nie mit einem österreichischen Entwickler zusammengearbeitet tatsächlich, also hab ich da nicht so viele Erfahrungen. Wenn ich selbst ein Spiel designen würde, wäre aber die erste Sprache auf jeden Fall Deutsch und ich würde mir jemanden suchen, der mich bei der englischen Version unterstützt.

Das ist ein guter Punkt! Für mich macht es ehrlich gesagt mental keinen Unterschied mehr, weil ich von der Arbeit her viel Englisch verwende und ich mich nicht mehr wirklich anstrengen muss. Aber ich kann mir gut vorstellen, dass es für viele Leute anders ist. Es muss ja auch einen Grund geben, warum die Publisher die Übersetzungen fordern.

I agree there is a lot of marketing BS around LLMs right now. But I would argue that they are quite useful for e.g. basic language and coding tasks and at least for me these are real-world use cases too.

The headline is misleading. By “real-world use” they mean using ChatGPT and Claude for street navigation in New York. Which is one very specific use-case.
