Phil@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•World’s first ‘superfast’ battery offers 400km range from 10 mins chargeEnglish
2·2 years agoThis , and I think the price will comedown a lot and soon, market pressure will see to that asap. We have yet to really see the economy of scale that is coming through and r&d for batteries is at a all time high. Plenty of promising developments in the very near future including the one cited in the op

91·2 years agoBut in my lifetime battery tech has improved tremendously. Even in the last 5 years charge density and speed of recharge has had massive improvements.

Phil@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.ml•Climate records tumble, leaving Earth in uncharted territory - scientists
131·3 years agoI have just read this entire thread and I have two observations.
1 the “tumble” discussion is unbelievably ironic as the whole public climate discussion has for years been a case of mass distraction IMO.
2 The other central discussion is dominated by someone , clearly a skeptic, and repeatably described as a troll, and although the basic assumptions taken are just factually wrong the context of the consequences discussed are more insightful that the rebuttals.
So currently the power and money is dominated by industries that do not want to change and they frustrate attempts to create meaningful global change. What change has occurred has been when money and power wish that change. Political courage will be needed to make things happen with any sort of urgency IMO

Basically my heart is here now and this is where I come for social media , that does not mean I will not use reddit from time to time , but those times are getting less and less, my main reason to use reddit now is to promote lemmy. To give a better idea I spent probably an hour a day on reddit or two or three visits. Now I have not visited for over a week and recent visits have been a few minutes.

71·3 years agoI have just visited reddit for the first time in quite a while , the picture imo is pretty grim for reddit. Dead subs , little actual life , and when you log out the front page is dire. I think that actual content is key here and that is where the crisis for reddit is shown clearly. Talk of the protest not working is just that, talk , in reality reddit has been deeply effected imo

9·3 years agoMy voices say that de-fed is best and I worry that not everyone will perceive the terrible consequences of not doing so. and yay for star trek :-)
Phil@lemmy.worldto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Why Defederating from Facebook/Meta is So Important
971·3 years agoMy gut tells me we should defed all corporate instances as a matter of policy. Our uniqueness is at jeopardy , think of threads like the borg.
Phil@lemmy.worldto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Theory: the only reason Meta cares about the fediverse / ActivityPub is so that threads isn't labeled a "gatekeeper" under the EU's new "Digital Markets Act"English
10·3 years agoI guess IF the fediverse decided universally not to fed and moved the code away from threads adding features say meta did not want, then they would be seen as de-facto gatekeeper again.

You have to open a account to :-
Comment videos Subscribe to channels to be notified of new videos Have access to your watch history Create your channel to publish videosAlthough you should be able to follow specific platforms via something like mastodon
Phil@lemmy.worldto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Youtube alternatives | Foss and privacy centered alternativesEnglish
1·3 years agoI really do not think that they are aiming to join the fediverse , the subscription model really suggests they want your money and have broadcast aspirations. I also think that the offerings are fairly low level atm of course that might change but I doubt it.
Phil@lemmy.worldto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Youtube alternatives | Foss and privacy centered alternativesEnglish
7·3 years agoThis by no means a expert explanation. But as I understand it peertube and owncast are video sharing sites that operate much like lemmy but for video. So people start platforms ( like a instance on lemmy ) and then other people can join said platform and watch the videos , however like lemmy you can watch videos across all platforms ( I assume much like lemmy as long as the platform admins allow ). Both peertube and owncast say they are Fediverse projects and as such it should be possible to access the videos on other fediverse enabled applications although not sure how well this in implemented.
I have to say as youtube alternatives I think they fit the bill best as it is free to watch , open source and quite an elegant solution , clearly early days but none the worse for that imo
Under the hood I believe it is a distributed load system ( a bit like the BBC’s Iplayer ) but that is beyond my pay grade.
EDIT
BTW peertube = youtube alterative owncast = twitch alternative tilvids = peertube platform

I am just never going back, lemmy has less content of course but the comments on what is here is just a totally different level, reddit just feels dirty and corrupt in comparison,
