I’m curious, why? I think metric makes sense in most regards but I like the granularity of F. The difference between 70F and 75F is pretty noticeable, but in C, it’s like what? 1 degree?

Games@lemmy.world•Hooded Horse ban AI-generated art in their games: "all this thing has done is made our lives more difficult"English
23·25 days agoI heard an interesting statistic the other day. Golf courses use vastly more water than AI. Upwards of 30x more in some areas.
AI usage only accounts for like 20% of water usage by data centers in general.

5·1 month agoI was recently building a web portal that could accept payments. I was looking into ways to avoid the extra credit card fees we’d have to pay to accept them. I was told I can’t charge an additional “credit card fee” because a lot of states outlawed them, but was told I could just relabel that fee as a “convenience fee” and it would be completely legal.
I think the thing a lot of people miss when doing these comparisons is at least back then, there were people regulating what could be shown to kids. Remember the old “hey kids tell your parents you want the GI Joe with King Fu grip!” and then that was disallowed?
The problem with YouTube and the like is you have to actively monitor literally everything they watch because every single video is a gamble. They used to say cartoons will rot kids brains, but these days a lot of what kids watch are literally brain rot.
My mom didn’t have to worry about a random OF creator making cartoons to try and thirst trap her 9 y/o son. Or Voltron literally trying to groom them.
Technically you’re still hearing the difference. If it makes contact, you’re hearing the music, if it doesn’t make contact, you’re not hearing the music.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Refrigerator ads are finally here!
1·3 months agoThey’re actually super easy to fix. Generally it’s just the solenoid needs to be swapped out. You can buy them cheap on Amazon for most fridges and install takes like 10 minutes.
I stay away from the OEM ones. While they do last longer, it’s cheaper to replace it every 3 years or so for like $30 than it is to pay for the OEM one.

1·3 months agoYou don’t have to have a smart washer and dryer to do this. If you get a smart outlet that monitors power usage, you can have it notify you when the usage dips. That’s how I do it.

I rarely use the bike these days but generally if you’re using a stationary bike for exercise, you shouldn’t be sitting the whole time.
It’s in the center console that closes by sliding the cover closed. I’m not saying it’s impossible for that to jam or come open, but in a case like that, the car would have to be in pretty bad shape and it still would have been useless in the glove box.

Once a month my dojo does a free women’s self defense class. It’s open to everyone and anyone, even if you don’t have family/friends who go to the dojo.
They even allow men (though rare) because everyone should have a basic knowledge of self defense but they focus on women since they are less likely to learn it on their own.
I have a combo window breaker, seatbelt cutter, fire starter, knife, flashlight next to the driver’s seat in my and my wife’s cars.
We used to keep it in the glove box until we realized in an emergency (when it would be needed), it would be inaccessible.
Funny enough, that’s actually not true. July and August were originally named Quintilis and Sextilis (5th month and 6th month respectively) and were both renamed by the Senate well after Julius and Augustus died to honor them.
January and February were (re-added) later by Pompilius to sync the Roman calendar with a lunar year (364 days).
Unless you meant Pompilius, but he added those months for totally legitimate reasons.

News@lemmy.world•Anti-vaccine myths surged on social media ahead of the CDC shooting
5·6 months agoI don’t get how people are still pushing this nonsense. Over 200 million people have taken the Covid vaccine inside the US alone. If it was that dangerous we’d see SOME kind of evidence of it by now.
I was in a meeting today that was supposed to only last 30 minutes, but ended up almost 1.5 hours because the PM spent 45 minutes complaining about a design, before they even read the design, then spent the next 30 minutes after being explained the design walking back their complaints without ever admitting fault or acknowledging they were wrong.
The worst part? Just an average Friday sync.

News@lemmy.world•Gavin Newsom says California will move forward with map redrawing plan in response to Texas effort
54·6 months agoRepublicans are geographically dispersed while Democrats are generally packed into urban areas. We lose 100% of the time if we try the same gerrymandering tactics. We need to be smarter, not play their games.
If you think I’m wrong, show me a single state we could flip from red to blue by gerrymandering. You need to show your work though. You can’t just say X state, you have to show HOW you could flip the state by gerrymandering.

Unless I’m misunderstanding what you’re saying, a million over 10 years equates to about 80,000 a year over those 10 years which is the median household income in the US. Far from wealthy and would still require you to work after that 10 years.
