I’m sure your specific instance is justified and in doing so, you don’t need a random internet stranger like myself to tell you it’s okay.

2·14 hours agoHoly shit that’s actually Tom Selleck selling reverse mortgages! What the hell happened man!
He also hung along with some Palestinian youth in the same trip it seems: https://x.com/ConanOBrien/status/902551821583081472
A lot of these people are likely tech folks. A lot of tech folks get high paying jobs. They used that pay to buy rental property.
A lot of these guys are landlords and are trying to convince people that the rent they charge is fair, market rate, and a favour because they’re taking on “risk” while you pay for their mortgage.

Men's Liberation@lemmy.ca•[JAMM Podcast - Casual Chat] Why Men Are So Sad
5·1 day agoI’m extroverted AF and post-COVID I’m stuck at home a lot. Most of my friends don’t go out and I live a bit in the burbs. I don’t like drinking and driving and public transport isn’t great. I prefer not to spend $100 to get a cab home.
One old friend called me out of blue and we hung out a few times before he gave me a sob story about his finances and I “lent” him $10K which I’m sure I’m never getting back.
I still make an effort to see people but I’m kinda tired. My hands hurt now because I’m on the computer all day for work and afterwards too. I miss doing things outside of work and winter in Ontario doesn’t help right now.
I listened to the Lolita podcast and it’s a great one hosted by someone who was a fan of the work and it made an impact on her.
It seems so many interpret the story of Lolita to be a tragic love story like Kubrick and it seems Rowling. It seems as though the more sensible interpretation would be a story about abuse and power where you’re made to empathize with the unreliable narrator, Humbert. I always get an ick when I hear people say it’s a love story.
I mean I loved Orson Scott Card’s book Ender’s Game and the get turned out to be a right-wing loon. It doesn’t change how I feel about the book.

55·2 days agoReminds me of this
“The Faces of Depression”

I’ve been clinically depressed in the past. It’s a tough fight. Also, a mix of imposter syndrome of telling people I didn’t really have depression and then hating myself while being depressed …

2·2 days agoBrazilian influencer who defended US immigration crackdown arrested by ICE Trump supporter Júnior Pena falsely claimed migrants being rounded up, including Brazilians, were ‘all crooks’
I’m willing to grant him an exception, not “all” but at least 1 from my count
Things feel so dystopian that I get the feeling that after they get everyone on debt slavery that they’ll put propaganda about how it’s unfair that debt is absolved on death and that your family/kids should pay for it. Fox News will be like: “why should a company’s debts just disappear? it’s unfair to the lender!”
I’m from the UK and the closest thing to the Internet to me was teletext. I loved it. My parents were baffled as to what I was doing.

News@lemmy.world•America is drinking more coffee but less of it from Starbucks
1·3 days agoYeah I’ve seen a few messages about their food being okay over time and I’m wondering which Starbucks these guys go to …
I mean their cookies and brownies are meh, but their breakfast items and other things were not great. At least not to the places I’ve been.
There’s a lot of those types of people in this thread too it seems … like there’s no reason you should be getting downvoted …
Anyways, it reminds me of this chef that I watch. He has some awesome plant based recipes and stuff I follow. So good. Anyways, he did one video about how much he hates vegans despite being one. He was being hyperbolic but there was always the feeling of “never being vegan enough”. Some vocal vegans kept shaming him about his leather couch and just spewing vile stuff in the comments even to other vegans.
He later points out in the video that it was a vegan couch and he went through great lengths to acquire it and said that he went vegan because of his love of animals and that it was a journey. There’s always something to be doing and he didn’t just start off vegan and he started small. However, there’s just so many people that just love being vile instead of supporting each other on their journey.
It seems these more vocal vegans would rather feel good by shaming others instead of trying to push the cause forward.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL "I will always love you" by Whitney Houston was a cover versionEnglish
3·4 days agoI don’t know how to describe it but there feels like a more “personal” or “honest” touch to Dolly Parton’s. With Whitney’s, her version is so beautiful because her voice is like an instrument and she plays it beautifully. However with Dolly’s … I could hear her words more.
That’s just to me, obviously everyone takes things differently.

Technology@lemmy.world•The TV industry finally concedes that the future may not be in 8KEnglish
2·4 days agoI like my frame because it faces a set of windows and with all my other tvs … I would have to close the blinds to see the tv in the day time.
However, the software is straight garbage. I didn’t even know about the favourite thing … every time I change source it would spend like a minute or two trying to figure out if it could connect to it for no reason.

News@lemmy.world•Amazon’s Promotion of ‘Melania’ Has Critics Questioning Its Motives
9·4 days agoThe Trumps pocketed $28 million from it directly, and I think it’s the most Amazon has ever paid to acquire a single movie/documentary ($40 mil to make it and $34 mil or so to market).
I mean they’d totally do that because of how popular this administration is and how much everyone loves Melania and wants to learn about her right? /s Totally not to curry favour and get tax breaks or deals with the government.
Yeah, I saw someone on a YT comment section (yes I know) citing “Google” as a source to back himself up. I was like, dude you have to read the link and that’s the real source.

News@lemmy.world•America is drinking more coffee but less of it from Starbucks
6·4 days agoWhat’s wrong with you? The CEO needs that money to fly on the company’s private jet! /s
Of course the company claims it’s for security reasons. I think the $90 million per year compensation must also be for security concerns following that logic.

I think they look more futuristic or rather most people think so. I’ve seen some say it’s because they’re aerodynamic and it’s better for that but I don’t know how much drag that could cause at typical speeds.
What’s weird about Tesla is not just the door handles getting in but also coming out too. They have like different ways of getting out if the electric door fails.
