  • I don’t know if there will be room for my 65 year old ass on bike paths dominated by wheely-ing tweens. When I lived near a reasonable amount of public transportation, I could take a 2.5 hour train to the beach or drive for 40 minutes. Whenever my car was in the shop and I had to take the bus to work I’d have to be at the bus stop at 4am to arrive at work by 6:30am vs leaving at 6a when I drove. Now that I live in a suburb of a suburb, there is no public transportation path that starts early enough to get me to or from work on time. I have an e-bike and put thousands of miles on a Segway MiniPro but neither can handle my 80 mile round trip commute. My car just passed 9 years old and 100k miles, ~30 miles per day. I paid $25k for the car itself including tax and interest, another $10k for insurance for 9 years, $35k for gasoline, $5k for repairs and maintenance, so as soon as robotaxis can beat ~$0.75/mile I’ll go that route.

  • In 2023 when I built my PC and ran a benchmark and it said I had a top 3% PC (now top 7%) I was PROPER chuffed. 3DMark is the ultimate pay-to-win and there I was with my lower middle-class-salary (and no kids). I have low double digits in gaming hours on the machine in the last two years and pretty much use it as an HTPC. I just loaded up the Witcher 3 Remastered and maybe I just don’t like gaming. I have a 5700X3D/9070XT as a backup and an 11600K/6900XT as a backup-backup. I had grand dreams of sim racing and local LLM and retro gaming and nah.

  • As a call center employee, the most inexplicably difficult part of my job is asking an older person to navigate to our website. When I give them the 9 letter address, it almost always results in a google search for them and the ordeal of having them try to pick out our website from the sponsored results brings joy to advertisers everywhere.

  • It’s been 10 years but the 2016 republican primary cycle was absolutely bizarre. Presumptive favorite Jeb fizzling out before he started and the rest of the field of very established politicians being unable to handle an infant of an opponent. It took Russian interference and Comey’s bizzare skullduggery to put the nail in Clinton’s coffin and even then she won the popular vote by over 2%. Sitting in a liberal bubble, I’ve been gobsmacked by his support and his “wins.”

  • I work at a DMV call center. People call me with vehicle registration or driver’s license problems and I help them out. AI is supposed to replace me so the state bought an AI voice recognition system. It can transcribe calls but cannot do anything with the information so a new part of my job is responding to what the AI interprets and then use AI canned responses to reply to the caller via email so I can train the AI.
