On reddit I occasionally get replies years after my original post/comment, and it always throws me a bit, like sitting in a time machine, travelling back to a random old conversation, the state that the discussed game was in at the time, etc.

I’m of a mixed mind if keeping old comment threads open is a good idea. For advice-based communities definitely, but for random conversations not really. The context changes, the people’s lives changes, dragging old conversations back to life just feels out of place.

I think it’s for different moods. When discovering a new community, I can spend a couple hours looking through several pages’ worth of of All Time Top posts, but for daily quick visits I just look at 1-2 pages of the Hot feed of my subscribed communities. If something doesn’t make it there, I’ll likely miss it. (I occasionally venture over to the Scaled feed too.)

I don’t think I ever looked through a community’s entire back catalogue though. Though tbf I did most of my deep diving on reddit, where it just wasn’t practical with the volume of posts (also like 10+ pages in it often started to feel like I was down to the dregs in quality). But it may be more practical on Lemmy/PieFed.

if it helps, as a lifetime Windows user I installed Linux Mint on an old laptop a few weeks ago, and used it for a week while travelling, and it went well :D It’s just different enough from Windows to have a bit of a learning curve, but nothing too scary.

I know of a few self hosted projects that has been used to some extent with AI and has gotten reaaaalllyyy bad security patches.

Yeah, I noticed similar too. I’ve been using a game mod for many years that is in active development, and its devs switched to very AI-heavy development earlier this year. They now add new features with lightning speed, but they are noticeably buggier and unreliable.

I think the most crucial part of the context in which a work was created is the mind it was created from. If that mind has the personality of an irredeemable asshole, that affects the way I perceive the art.

I’m more surprised that/if historically people separated the art from the artist. No art is created in a vacuum, their creators live in the world along with everyone else. I guess the only justification I can see if someone believes that art solely comes from divine inspiration or similar.

I use https://noai.duckduckgo.com/ together with the uBlacklist browser extension. It lets you ban domains from your search results across all major search engines and also lets you subscribe to blacklists compiled by others, such as https://github.com/laylavish/uBlockOrigin-HUGE-AI-Blocklist (I see now that this hasn’t been updated since last year, but there are most likely others out there.)

There’s also Ecosia that lets you choose between Bing and Google as result provider. (And for a while now they have been working on a European Web Index with Qwant to replace the US sources.)

I studied video game art in uni, but left the course after 1.5 years bc it went in a different direction I hoped for (it went all-in on 3D, and the 2D I was actually interested in was done in a month). By that point I already had a part-time job as graphic designer, so I continued that instead, and eventually managed to land a graphic-designer-ish job at a non-profit organisation.

My current job is a lot less glamorous from the outside than video game art, or even a typical graphic design portfolio would be, but I really enjoy it :)

I know many trans people know their gender identity from an early age, and have strong convictions despite society’s pressure, but being agender, I had no strong convictions about my gender, it wasn’t even there. And I always tried to be practical, and so the only option that seemed available was to just try to put up with my born sex and assigned gender no matter how unhappy they made me 🫠
