“What kind of decent, good-looking woman would want to go out with my son”

The etymology or aboriginal is basically “comes from away”; kind of Eurocentric. Indigenous means “comes from within a place” etymologically so while it is kind of semantic it’s obvious which one is the better choice. Many indigenous people however prefer ‘Indian’ because it’s how First Nations people are referred to in the Indian Act.

I like the anti-corporate sentiment, but this has “pudding fingers” all over it. The not so subtle homophobia and misogyny turned my stomach.
OMG I thought I was alone! Have you tried the “Words for Granted” podcast?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What’s a painful experience you haven’t had in years?
13·2 years agoGetting shocked.
I used to help my father-in-law on the farm and he had an electric fencer for the barnyard that was way too powerful for the length of fence it was hooked up to. I knew that; what i didn’t know was that it was grounding out on a piece of flashing on the barn. It put me on my ass.
He also has this electric fencing that’s made out of rope with small metal strands woven into it. That shit hurts too but in a different way. Maybe because there are more points of contact.
I got shocked doing some wiring last week and it was nothing compared to the electric fence.

The Japanese were prepared to fight to the last man, woman, or child to defend the home islands. They were geared for war in a way that is hard to understand from a modern perspective. They were propagandized heavily.
The other thing to recognize was that the USSR had declared war on Japan the day before Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki. This violated the Soviet-Japanese non-aggression pact. Before this there was hope that the Soviets could advocate for better terms for Japanese surrender. The Japanese Supreme Council was firmly opposed to ending the war. After Nagasaki, Hirohito intervened in the council and ended the war.
The conventional ordinance dropped on Tokyo killed many more people than Little Boy killed in Hiroshima. The Japanese barely surrendered after the nuclear attacks. I would suggest listening to Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History miniseries Countdown to Armageddon if you want to know more.

I think they were referring to the Underworld of the Roman Pantheon
