Michigan and Ontario both have Bois Blanc Islands. Michigan’s is “Boys Blank” and Ontario’s is “Bob Low”.

Can’t forget Noordeloos, Vriesland, Overisel, Drenthe, and Borculo. Been to Borculo a few times. Lotsa folks with Dutch/Frisian/Low German surnames in the area, including the (in)famously wealthy Van Andel and De Vos families of Grand Rapids.
Supposedly, the phrase “if you ain’t Dutch, you ain’t much” used to be common here, but I’ve never heard it used unironically. Likely died off with time.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•[Video] Jeffery Epsteins butler was caught in an FBI sting in 2009 trying to sell the client victim list. He told them the entire operation, 17 years ago. And the FBI did NOTHING.English
40·17 days agoGenuinely just dumbfounded when I got to the point in the video where the little popup blurb refers to Epstein with the memed “disgraced financier” title. Holy shit, just call him the “infamous child sex trafficker”, that’s what almost everybody who knows his name knows him for.
Most LatAm I’ve spoken to online (including Brazilians) insisted that it’s one continent and that North, Central, and South America are subcontinents. Several of them have ranted at me about how it’s immoral for the US to monopolize “American” because of it.
fwiw in the US I was taught that North and South America are two continents and that Central America and the Caribbean are subcontinents of NA; the Panama-Colombia border demarcates the continents.
Only other one that really ever gets brought up is Australia vs Oceania as a continent. Don’t think I ever heard of Oceania until after graduating.
Hell, I make my bolognese with cinnamon and nutmeg. Tastes great.

25·23 days agoAlmost certain that the person you’re replying to is saying that the article should say that it’s a war crime, not that it isn’t one because the article doesn’t say so.
Yeah, though I can see how it looks like it’s going the other way at first glance, what with the fish facing the wrong direction.

2·2 months agoVery late response, but I was thinking back to this and realized that, to be pedantic, yeah, female lycanthropes should actually be called wifwolves, or something to that effect; a woman becoming a werewolf would include turning into a man, if the root words are taken literally.
Kinda like how female automatons should technically be gynoids, not androids, because “andro-” means “male” in Greek, like “wer-” in English, but language doesn’t always evolve neatly like that.
The word itself is possibly a combination of sylvestris and nympha (forest and nymph), but they’re air spirits from Paracelsus’ 16th century works. Sylphs go along with undines, gnomes, and salamanders (water, earth, and fire spirits).
Some different kinds of nymphs are dryads (oak trees), oceanids (oceans), oreads (mountains), and plenty of others.

3·2 months agoNot sure if logging in would “solve” it, but I’ve been unable to watch YouTube videos while on a VPN on desktop with FreeTube and on mobile with LibreTube for a month or so now.
Also, on FreeTube the recommended videos on the sidebar usually include a ton of unrelated news channels. I’ve got so many of them blocked now but they keep showing up.

fwiw FreeTube is a desktop client.

11·2 months agoConsidering how much more relevant the Jedi games are, that’s probably more likely, but my first thought was “oh shit, Worf’s got Bastilla’s lightsaber”, ha. Hers was also double-bladed and yellow.
I wasn’t arguing against it, I was saying that it does happen.
fwiw I have — both the stereotypical “I’m 1/X native American” and also “I’m X% Dutch”, the latter due to folks taking pride in having Dutch heritage, real or imagined, where I grew up.
From context it just sounds like they were saying that a post with that link followed immediately after this one in their lemmy feed. Coming off unnecessarily aggressive.

15·2 months agoMany if not most religions historically didn’t have a word for their particular belief system; the scholarly name for Germanic paganism is “Germanic paganism” because pre-Christian Germans didn’t have a name for their shared beliefs. Sometimes you may see neologisms or names for neopagan movements applied to the now-dead religion — I’ve seen Germanic neopaganism (aka “Heathenry”)'s less commonly-used “Asatru” used for the original religion in a game. Same with others like “Kemetism”, which refers to the neopagan movement and not the ancient Egyptian religion.
Not a historical scholar but, to my understanding, for a lot of folks “what’s your religion” would have been a nonsensical question because that’s just how the world works and you wouldn’t think of it as being a belief system separate from physically evident reality. Folks are free to correct me on that.
