Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is Lemmy's problem with AI?English
231·7 months agoScientists have estimated that the power requirements of data centers in North America increased from 2,688 megawatts at the end of 2022 to 5,341 megawatts at the end of 2023, partly driven by the demands of generative AI. Globally, the electricity consumption of data centers rose to 460 terawatt-hours in 2022. This would have made data centers the 11th largest electricity consumer in the world, between the nations of Saudi Arabia (371 terawatt-hours) and France (463 terawatt-hours), according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.
By 2026, the electricity consumption of data centers is expected to approach 1,050 terawatt-hours (which would bump data centers up to fifth place on the global list, between Japan and Russia).
If your phone could do the ai trash, it would still be morally bankrupt and devoid of any humanity. But it’s done on 5 gpus that eat as much energy as your entire household.
The real usefulness of ai technology is probably limited to 1% of what it is now. Signal processing, protein folding, translation and transcription are all fine and well. But it is 99% spam and so I’ll judge the technology on that.
I got fired two weeks ago and it fucks me up pretty badly.
But the fact that i don’t have to use Teams, at least for a while, is just such a relief. Fuck that shit.

6·11 months agoI am not sure what negative effects my meds would have to have before I’d consider not taking them.
If they took away 10 years of my life I’d still take them because the 20 years without them were mostly pretty fucking miserable.

8·1 year agoIn a general sense. In the day to day business these ghouls can and will do things that will hurt their mid/long term interest because it fits their vibe or they don’t really get it/know the history.
Elon does want to lead a fascist empire, but the nonsense-ai-crypto-bazinga version in his ketamine-head, not the fairly boring but successful, actually existing empire.

ADHD memes@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Just startes with meds, I have some doubts.English
10·1 year agoFirst off: Congratulations on getting diagnosed. It’s a huge step and 18 is a really nice timing. Untreated ADHD in adults can be really crippling, because all the supporting structures like school and family break away and suddenly you realize that managing your own time schedule and house hold is really fucking hard. So good job 👍
Second: You took 30 mg of Elvanse/LDX for the first time and you felt nothing? That’s… impressive, honestly. Methylphenidate Non Responder are fairly known, but usually that amount of dexamphetamine does something to the human body. From your age I’d guess you are not a regular user of recreational amphetamines and have built a massive tolerance…
I also started with 30 mg Elvanse and was pretty seriously zoned in, deep focus, elevated mood, highly awake, loss of appetite and a very revelatory feeling, that I could finally tackle all the bullshit that I had avoided, delayed, ignored and forgotten. For me, the 30 mg were honestly too much. Over the last year I’ve built a tolerance and am now taking 40-70mg daily, depending on the challenges of the day.
Still I wouldn’t worry. No effect also means no bad side effects. Adjusting the dosage is entirely normal in the beginning and something your psychiatrist should do anyway. The therapeutic dosage goes up to 70 mg and there are edge cases with even higher doses. There is also methylphenidate (Ritalin, MPH, etc) and Atomotexetin. But for now, just stick with what you got.
Dealing with ADHD is a marathon, not a sprint. You’ve just started, so take the days as they come and trust your feelings above all else. If it works, you’ll know. And if not keep at it.
Also check out /c/neurodiverse, there are a lot of good posts and ADHD experiences shared.

10·1 year agoWe had a bright orange magic box that was connected to a beige windows 95 box that you were never allowed to turn off because nobody knew if it would survive a reboot and there was no software for the orange box for a more modern setup. Almost felt an like arcane ritual, typing in the command lines to get it to work.

Eradication is really hard. If you just kill mosquitoes in a certain area, what’s gonna stop them from coming back? You’re just not gonna get all of them.
This way you introduce a mutation that can actually propagate through the gene pool, disabling the undesired trait for future generations. It’s also highly selective, so that you don’t accidentally get rid of other species or poison an area with pesticides.
Also living beings have no “purpose”. They fill an evolutionary niche and shape the ecological system around them. The piss off us, so we play a little god, but nature has no opinions or morals whatsoever.

3217·2 years agoNuclear power is literally more expensive at this point than renewables. No, you can’t keep using the shitty, cracking, deadly waste producing nuclear plants of the past, not even the power companies want that, and building new ones takes over 10 years, not counting all the planning and beaurocracy you have to go through. And to become CO2 neutral after all the excavation, construction and mining necessary takes another decade. Nuclear power plants are MASSIVE engineering undertakings.
Meanwhile modern windmills can be mass-produced right now and take like 5 years depending on their placement to be both cost and CO2 neutral. After that it’s LITERALLY free energy for a good 30 years. And they become cheaper and bigger and more efficient every single year. And btw if you ever pull out an article or a calculation that is older than a year for any comparison, you are dealing with OLD data. They have become far more efficient and flexible in their placement and will likely continue to do so.
The anti-nuclear protests were completely right. Stop playing the people who wanted a safer world without nuclear waste and incidents against the modern climate movement.
TL;DR: Wheels on windmill go brrrr, nuclear power is not a short term solution and never has been.

1·2 years agoLove popOS, but it did not play well with my multi monitor setup. It just couldn’t deal with different resolutions (qhd laptop, two fhd monitors) and sizes. Mint can. So I am back to Mint and stopped worrying about distro hopping.

3·2 years agoI don’t want to compile anything. I don’t want to “make”. I don’t want to use command lines. I don’t want to download Rust. Or know the difference between python2 and python3 and how you still have to be specific about it. I never wanna read a git manual with lines that mean nothing to me again. I don’t care about snap or flatpack or whatever package distribution gives me a year old version of my program on this distro and how that version differs from the one from the webpage.
Sorry Linux, but a big download button, double click, “install to c:/program files”, “want a short cut to desktop”, done. is the gold standard for 99% of applications.
I know there are reasons. But still, it sucks.

Comradeship // Freechat@lemmygrad.ml•How do I stop being an undisciplined coward?English
6·2 years agoAlways strange to hear these responses. The process to find a working medication for your conditon should be a long, interactive one with lots of reflection. If the benefits outweigh the side effects, use them. If not, try something else (dosage, alternative meds, timing, food etc).
Lisdexamphetamine (Vyvanse, Elvanse) allows me to do my work. The alternative is to sit in front of a screen and browse the internet for 4 hours, only to hastily cobble together something so I don’t get fired, while being wrecked with guilt until I got to sleep. It’s not perfect, but if your brain chemistry is incompatible with the act of writing an email, chemical help is very much appreciated.

It’s more like whack-a-mole. They keep getting a bigger hammer, but that’s really not the problem.
