World News@lemmy.world•80 Teslas damaged at Hamilton dealership, largest car vandalism reported in Canada against the U.S. company | CBC NewsEnglish
1·1 year agoI am of the opinion that no one should be vandalizing property that they don’t own themselves. Protest, sure (following whatever laws Canada has in place for that), don’t buy a Tesla, sure, encourage everyone you’ve ever met not to buy one, fine, but please respect the right of people who don’t want their stuff vandalized.
Also, while dealerships have insurance, doing this just makes the insurance go up for everyone. But that’s not my point. People shouldn’t vandalize the property of others because they really, really, really x5, don’t like Elon.
I’m not an Elon or Trump apologist, I’m just someone fighting on the side of civilized behavior.

General Discussion@lemmy.world•Does driving a Tesla justify being victimized?
1·1 year agoI can’t believe this is so controversial, but people shouldn’t be blamed for buying one even now. It’s just a car. If people hate Elon (not a big fan myself), then don’t buy one. But respect other people’s right to buy what they want and leave their shit alone.
I wish “live and let live” was still a thing. We might not be so polarized if it was.

World News@lemmy.world•Real estate tycoon must pay $9 billion to avoid execution in VietnamEnglish
1·1 year agoI’m not saying we should kill them. I’m saying we should use the possibility of that being on the table to make them pay their taxes.
I’m guessing most of them do pay their taxes. There are just lots of loopholes that have been lobbied for by the rich that they are using that their expensive tax accountants find for them. Instead of whacking billionaires, maybe get rid of the tax loopholes that let them pay so much less in taxes as compared to their extreme wealth.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Tell one thing that you miss after switching from another OS to Linux.
3·1 year agoAlso, if you’re okay downloading and installing mods manually, many of them “just work”, even some of the more tricky ones if you’re willing to tinker a bit. Some games have mod installers that are cross platform (for example, Satisfactory Mod Manager has a linux version and it works great).

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•Google Is Killing Retro Dodo & Other Independent SitesEnglish
1·2 years agoGoogle Search brought in lots of revenue (comparatively), but in return they became dependent on the whims of a crazy-large tech company that has turned the corner into a full-on IBM-style corporation. I’ve seen this kind of thing happen with people advertising local businesses on Facebook and then the algorithm killing their income overnight. You have to treat it as a large risk to your business and do everything you can think of to mitigate it. Which maybe they were, I don’t know, but I wouldn’t want my business to be reliant on the good nature of a huge tech company like Google.

World News@lemmy.world•JK Rowling, Joe Rogan and Elon Musk are fuming over Scotland’s hate crime lawEnglish
1·2 years agoI just don’t get the Joe Rogan hate. I’ve watched a fair number of episodes of his, maybe a few dozen. I’ll sometimes agree with his take on something, other times I’ll disagree (often in the same episode), but it’s usually at least interesting. I watch them for the topics not in some kind of idol worship of the guy. Despite whatever hot takes people are going to throw at me from his hundreds or thousands of hours of hosting his podcast, I still think he asks good questions and that his long-form interviews and laid back discussion format fosters more interesting discussion than I see in other places.
I’m not one to throw the baby out with the bathwater if I find someone I watch on YouTube or wherever says something I disagree with or holds a viewpoint I don’t like, though.

1·2 years agoLinux has come a long way since I last tried it ~15 years ago
100% this. Linux has been my daily driver since ~2005 and it seems like suddenly one day I went from playing tux racer and trying to get Skyrim to work to some degree with wine to buying games on steam with little fear of having to anything more than choose proton experimental and maybe add gamemoderun to the settings. It’s a completely different world now.

Angband. I don’t stick with it long, but I always come back, even though I’ve never killed Morgoth or the Balrog in Moria before that. Still, I enjoy it for a while and then move on again.

World News@lemmy.world•Global billionaire tax could yield $250 billion annually, study saysEnglish
1·2 years agoIf they don’t like their “tax evasions”, then they should change the laws and remove the loopholes that allow it. I’m not a supporter of a wealth tax (i.e. being taxed on something repeatedly because you still happen to own it) no matter who it is that would suffer from it that we all collectively dislike.
The other side of that coin is to allow people to question your beliefs and to actually think about things when they do.
Those two things together is what will really help, imo.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What is the best linux alternative to OneNote?English
6·2 years agoI’m feeling old. I have a folder called Notes with a directory hierarchy with text files in them. If I want to edit something, I navigate to the appropriate directory and type “vim -S”. If I want to get to them remotely (which I haven’t really needed) I would SSH in to my system with whatever terminal emulator I had available.

It’s also early access, so it will presumably help with it being a bit shallow. There are a surprising amount of things locked behind various mechanics that I’m starting to stumble across. For example, if you’re a jerk to people enough your karma score will fall and now you have access to rifle through vending machines looking for loose change or robbing an ATM. I have a feeling there are a lot more of these kinds of things to discover.
Just getting out of the Sims price hell is worth it for me. I’ve had some good experiences with early access games in the past so I’m reasonably upbeat about what may come down the line.
