Science Fiction@lemmy.world•Silly Asses (1958) – Isaac Asimov
4·8 days agoMy attention span has been really harmed by my phone usage, but at the time I first read it, I was able to read 400 pages a day (same nowadays). I have focus problems watching videos or movies, but reading is just in my blood. I think the explanation lies in the fact that reading, if you think about it, is non-stop action/interaction, contrary to videos. I guess that’s why I can read so much without difficulty.
So the attention-span probably wasn’t the reason it bored me.
I’ll maybe try again in the future.

Definitely putting it on my to-read list.

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•Silly Asses (1958) – Isaac Asimov
12·8 days agoDidn’t know that, amazing trivia! Found the story on Stackexchange.
As for Asimov’s long-form writing: I tried to read Foundation, but I couldn’t get into the first book (it bore me to death). I might try again in the future, maybe Ive tried reading it too young.
Idk. Any Asimov fan here?

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•Examination day (1958) – Henry Slesar
1·17 days agoForgot that line :
“Forget about it,” he said. “He’ll do all right.”
Its the father, probably thinking his son will ace the test.

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•Examination day (1958) – Henry Slesar
4·18 days agoSince Slesar really insists in writing the dad’s multiple wrong answers, I assume he wants him to appear dumb. Plus, if he was smart, giving wrong answers wouldnt help unless he knew what the test consists, which is highly likely.
I believe the father is “dumb” (he just doesn’t know certain facts), but still the parents dont know for sure what will happen.

2·18 days agoDamn! The year was the first thing I saw. Incredibly prescient.

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•What lesser-known sci-fi reads do you recommend?
1·23 days agoInteresting, makes me think about the movie Groundhog day.
Yeah exactly.
From SFSS’s very first posts in 2019, I chose to include the publication year in the title.
At first, there was no particular reason for doing so. Later, however, I realized that it was necessary in order to place each story in its proper historical context (especially since I post both Golden Age stories and more recent works).
I only discovered Brown recently.
A while ago, I posted another shorter story (on AI) by him (“Answer”).
This new story is even better. It’s just a bit too long for an online read, I guess…Worth the read though! Airplane mode to the rescue.

Cool, you’re welcome!
