  • Not a scout, but I’d wager the majority of information regarding plant types can be found in wikipedia or in any hiking pamphlet, and you can find survival books that explain core concepts like building a shelter for free on sites like Anna’s Archive (just use a VPN so your ISP doesn’t throw a fit).

I usually read a wide variety of books regarding random skills that may or may not come in handy one day - not as good as in-person demonstrations, ofc, but it works :)

(Honestly, as an engineer - most of what I know for improvising solutions in dangerous situations or to solve problems came from what I read in downloaded books XD)

  • It is normal and mandated, but unfortunately is also underfunded and often low quality/small portions (for perspective, after including costs of labor and maintenance, schools have roughly $1.50 to work with at scale for each meal).

For parents who can afford it and (crucially) have the time to prepare lunch for their children, they do so. Growing up, I always enjoyed making my own lunch or bringing leftovers from last night :)

That’s not the case for many, many people though. The amount of children who count on the school meal as their only reliable source of nutrition each day is staggering. The meal program was expanded during Covid, but afterwards some conservative areas walked it back substantially in an attempt to “save costs for taxpayers”. It’s counterintuitive as all hell though, as my parents (who are/were teachers) would put it, “You can’t teach a hungry child”.

  • Old money vs new money. You can read about that more in books like The Great Gatsby.

High net worth individuals don’t have the same income on paper (because that would be taxable at a very high rate), so most of their wealth is tied in assets and investments that can be pulled from and taxed at a much lower rate (or even tax free in certain cases). An ordinary person with a sudden windfall doesn’t have the same treatment, and get the full amount taxed.

Also, the lottery is a tax on those who don’t understand (or are willing to learn) about statistics. Never play.
