  • Good thing is, you can go in stages. I started out many years ago with wifi bulbs/plugs through Google, then Alexa (because echo dots went on sale super cheap once). Then I got a Hubitat and started moving things over to Zigbee/Z-wave/local Wifi, i.e. light bulbs got switched over when they burned out, new switches and plugs are local-only, etc. then upgraded my homeassistant to a raspberry pi. I still have Alexa speakers, but Nabu Casa is developing a smart speaker that can be configured to run fully local, so I’ll probably be getting a few of those soon-ish and cut out one more bit of Big Brother at least.

  • Also keeping in mind with the current state of the capitalist hellscape, avoiding companies that supported trump/GOP can be difficult to impossible for a good chunk of people. If the only grocery store that you’re able to get to is Walmart, I am not going to criticize you eating.

Virtually every automaker doung business in North America has kissed trump’s ass at some point in the last decade.

Nestle and Unilever are fucking everywhere and also have many subsidiaries that it can be difficult to figure out if they’re involved in the product you’re using.

Good luck using technology produced by a company that hasn’t supported him or the republican party.

With how badly things are ratfucked, I will applaud any effort to reduce consumption from these companies, because it’s at least a little better than actively supporting them.

  • pass on open trade/borders with US, their lack of regulation and standards on food means most of what they produce is garbage and/or potentially contaminated. Not to mention simply flooding the markets with their crap. When Mulroney negotiated NAFTA, it crushed so many industries in Canada, and we’re really only starting to attempt to recover from that… Maybe the only good thing Trump has done is to galvanize us to make better trade agreements with other countries and not rely on free trade with the US.

  • Seems like a great thing at first, y’know, wife AND Kate? Awesome!

Next thing you know, it’s “Kate does this, why don’t you?” and “You don’t satisfy me the way Kate does”, then “Kate and I are going to go on a cruise together.” Before you know it, it’s “I think it’s time we took a break, I need to focus on my relationship with Kate”; before you know it, you’re living by yourself in a van down by the river!
