Have you tried emailing history faculties in Chinese universities? It’s impossible to explain your situation without being inappropriately personal but asking for some guidance or advice saying that certain topics are difficult to study in Canada would be enough for them to read between the lines. No harm in reaching out to see if anyone reaches back.

Sorry that you’re having to go through all of that. It sucks being in the belly of the beast and feeling like there’s nothing you can do to get through to people.
