Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•Sweden and Germany slash aid budgets to focus on Ukraine and defence spendingEnglish
10·8 days agoThis just sucks. Just take the money from the frozen Russian assets and pay development aid. Europe has not reason to want famines in Africa. This will just backfire.

Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.@slrpnk.net•Why the EV Revolution Just Stalled - Patrick BoyleEnglish25·8 days agoIt is a US problem. They cut subsidies, do not let Chinese EVs in the market and Trump killed the laws of a lot of US states to end ICE sales 2035. The rest of the world sees higher EV sales. That is very much including the EU. They get cheaper every year and combustion engine sales are falling already.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Why do Americans love European squares but have so few at home?English
7·10 days agoYou do not necessarily end up with good squares by not doing that either. Just look at modern Chinese planning. A grid of large roads, but with large blocks, which then are filled with rows of high rises. The blocks are quite walkable and large enough to offer basic services to its residents, but you just do not end up with nice public squares that way.
Most Republicans hate Russia and Putin. So this makes sense.
They want the Confederacy back. As in an oligarchy with slaves based on race. Modern day Russia is pretty close to that, as were a lot of the Latin American dictatorships, which they also supported.
The main issue with the Soviets in their eyes, was that the Soviets at least pretended to have some decent values. Something, which they despise in other groups as well. Take for example the Democrats.

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•Russian Submarine hit in Dramatic Attack in Black SeaEnglish
3·15 days agoTorpedos have fibre optic cables to control them for the submarine or ship they are launched from. Those are quite long, so an unmanned service vassel could transport such a torpedo close to the port and then launch it inside it.
Past promised pedestrians slasher and present delivers.

World News@lemmy.world•As Trump targets Venezuela, its allies Russia and China show little signs of supportEnglish
9·16 days agoObviously. Everybody knows that if the US is able to invade Venezuela and set up some puppet government. The big question is if they end up with some sort of rebell movement. That however would be supported secretly. Also neither helped Iran, so that was to be expected.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•American planners: how do make sure oil companies and automakers get even richer?English
3·16 days agoIn Germany for example there were 19km of Autobahn and 56.5km of high speed rail line added in the last five years. Rail is an alternative to large roads. So freeways like the Autobahn network is similar to high speed rail, larger local roads with regional rail and four lane or more roads inside cities are tram or metro lines. However for local roads the alternative is cycling and walking paths and even there you probably want some limited access for things like ambulances, trucks(stores or moving large things), firetrucks and so forth. So everybody is building a lot more roads then rail.

1·17 days agoThe Federal Reserve has unemployment figures as well and they are relatively low. They also claim the US is loosing jobs, so not a great future for them.

Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•Stone houses that are passively 8°C cooler than the outdoors in summer (26° when it's 34°)English
13·17 days agoThermal mass so stuff like stone, brick, earth or similar stores the average temperature. The more you have the longer the time period they average out over. So for in Panelleria the mean temperature in August is 26C and that is what those buildings keep over the entire day, even though it can get as hot as 34C during the day. If you have more thermal mass, for example in caves or underground structures, you can have the mean temperature of an entire year.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump Is “basically shutting down the legal immigration system”English
2·18 days agoLess competition for American workers(similar story for tariffs). There is a reason for unemployment is so low and that is mainly that the US is loosing population to migration, which has not been the case for basically ever. The issue is that the trade war is hurting the US economy, so workers do not really benefit from it.
At the same time capitalist like it to a degree, as it makes migrants much more dependent on their jobs, then American workers. As in visas often depend on having a job.
Obviously capitalists still want migrants to exploit.
