It’s sad to see someone who seems to want to do the right thing this bad fall victim to some kind of savior complex where they completely fail to empathize with the people they want to save.

if i understood his long, rambly posts about it, he might have wanted to save the fediverse, but he didn’t do it for us.

he did it for the “normies” who would otherwise be filtered out by “malcontents” and toxic content; for those used to (relatively) comfier social media platforms.

i think fundamentally, though, it’s better for fewer newbies to engage with the fediverse (and for some to turn back) than to have the masses use this place the same as any other social media, with a curated feed where nothing too wrong or uncomfortable ever pops up. i don’t think we really want that audience, anyway.

i wonder if things would be different if he started with that attitude.

something i think people miss in the replies here is that Minecraft is largely a sandbox game.

when it comes to worldgen, some features are meant to serve as setpeices to build around and explore; large lush caves and the newer mountains are great backdrops to build in, and structures like ancient cities are awesome to find and loot.

other features, however, are meant to inspire players to change them in their own way. the most obvious example of this are villages; some players sprawl them out into bustling towns, others shove the lot of 'em into a large trading hall, and some just make their own house to move in.

there are even secret villager types in biomes that don’t have them (jungle + swamp) to encourage players to set up their own.

villages would be less effective, though, if they were already beautiful metropolises that players didn’t ever have to change. the most Mojang ever did towards this were the changes in 1.14; even then, they were careful not to overdo it.

so sure, there are a ton of ways Mojang could make sulfur springs better past this. they could sprawl them out more, have a custom structure nearby using the new blocks, make the springs have richer colours…

… or maybe you should go out, find one, and build what you want to see.

i think a lot of it comes down to how much easier it is to drop Harry Potter than entire social platforms and such.

for example, it’ll take time and energy for me to move from Windows to Linux, which i simply don’t have right now. but all i need to do to stick it to Rowling is not care about Harry Potter.

now, that doesn’t mean i would go out of my way to harass people who still support the franchise, but i could see how that would embolden other people to do so, and i still think it’s important to let people know that J.K. Rowling actively advocates against trans people existing.

my interpretation of this is that she’ll still be under other managers, and wouldn’t be making any big decisions alone. regardless, this is not a good look for Mojang, especially at a time where the community are getting impatient with Bedrock’s issues.

yeah, i’d say there’s a difference between borrowing a word from another language/dialect and using a word that was invented to be racist.

English specifically has a ton of loanwords - “tycoon” is from the Japanese 大君 (taikun) meaning “great prince/high commander”, “balaclava” is from the name of a settlement in Crimea (Балаклава), “pet” is from the Scottish Gaelic “peata” meaning “tame animal”… and that’s just three words out of thousands, from a little digging on wikipedia.

so i’m not sure if excluding AAVE from contributing to the development of English as a language out of ‘respect’ is strictly good or not.

now, i don’t speak AAVE, and i haven’t done any reading about if AAVE speakers mind their vocabulary making its way into broader English slang - if so, then i rescind what i said here. i just think it’s interesting to think about.

another reason to not just use the elytra is always a plus, and another bit of regular, tiered gear is great - hoping they do that for armour next, which tends to be really samey compared to the tool/weapon variety the game has.

it’s unfortunate that both the Nautilus and spears were both leaked beforehand, since it got people speculating about a much larger ocean update which was never gonna be the case. Mojang’s official teasers also basically confirmed the Nautilus leak, which didn’t help.

while i’m fine with them doing smaller updates and touching up old areas of the game, i did find myself saying “cool, but that was it?”, like i did when the happy ghast was announced. really hoping they have something good planned for 1.22 - i would be satisfied with something similar in size to 1.21, but it feels like the community will implode if they don’t do an end update at some point soon.

You’re right that the image could be clipart, and a human could have made those typos, but there are some non-human tells in here other than that.

The P in protection is a lowercase capital, and one of the r’s in irŕritation is accented. The latter could’ve been mistyped on a phone keyboard, but in that case it would’ve been autocorrected, and that still doesn’t explain the P.

There’s also some weird GPT-like descriptions that are thrown in for no reason. Why does the bandana being “fashionable” matter? How are arm warmers “subtle”, exactly?

As another commentor pointed out, a T-shirt with a graphic is more likely to make you recognisable, so that part’s just wrong. I also don’t get why “tactical/military bags” should be “avoided”? Seems like the kinda misinformation AI would spout.

What I really don’t get here is why someone would use AI to generate the entire thing, rather than only using it for the graphic (still morally questionable but excusable) and adding the text in manually (something you can do in MS paint).
