8·3 years agoI’ll keep calling it Twitter until all of the branding is gone. My login notification email is the same as it has been. Blue bird and all.
No doubt. Ten years ago, that same phrase would’ve meant I had to decide between gas and food on Wednesday.
Now it’s enough to pay the bills and tuition after we lost their income because of covid. I’m constantly teetering on overdrafts thanks to the financial obligations we have from when there was 40k more a year in the bank. Sure, it might not be for the same reasons, but it’s a similar situation. It left me with no room for savings. You can be broke and make good money, due to situations beyond your control.
I came from three generations of broke people on both sides. It’s not like I don’t get it. Just decided to prioritize the betterment of someone I care about, and not remain in crushing debt for the rest of my life. I drive a 13 year old truck. My phone is 4 years old. We shop at discount grocery stores. I’m not just blowing it.
Point being, if I lived anywhere else but Ohio or some equally inexpensive state, I would have lost everything by now.
The only reason I still live in Ohio. My salary is almost double the median income, and I’m still just barely staying out of the paycheck to paycheck life while paying my spouses way through school. I wouldn’t have been able to afford a house anywhere else with just my income and maintain what semblance of a life we do have.
The perks of living in the decaying rust belt I guess.

Linus Tech Tips@lemmy.ml•Madison on why she quit
153·3 years agoCan’t wait to watch Linus fumble over the explanation of this one. I’m sure it’ll just be a lot of deflection and not-so-subtle victim blaming, but at this point he needs to squirm. Can’t pawn it off on “the new CEO.”

Lemmy.World Announcements@lemmy.world•Removal of piracy communities
146·3 years agoI’m very conflicted about this. On one hand, it’s kind of bullshit to take this level of action on something that can be handled on a case-by-case basis, when the need arises.
On the other hand, I’d prefer to see Lemmy avoid the reputation that Mastodon has garnered with the activities that are vastly under moderated there. With the size that some instances are reaching obviously there needs to be a level of discretion towards the content you will allow.
It’s, however, a slippery slope from protecting the community to accepting bribes for exclusive access to your user base.
“Due to moral objections, we’ve decided to block this meme community. However here’s an alternative that will show you advertisements disguised as funny memes! They even have most of the same content as the old one! Enjoy!”
Don’t let that become reality.

Technology@lemmy.world•All smartphones, including iPhones, must have replaceable batteries by 2027 in the EUEnglish
192·3 years agoHonestly, I’m all for it if it means bringing back ridiculously sized phone batteries with huge bumps that can act as a finger shelf. My note 2 with a 4200mah battery was a beast in 2013.

2·3 years agoI always thought it’d be more of a feature phone type os. Couldn’t compete with what Android had to offer to the mainstream Western market at the time using primarily HTML, but I’m glad to find out that is what it turned into.

Sync for Lemmy@lemmy.world•Daily Lemmy comments up from ~7m to ~11m following the launch of Sync?English
12·3 years agoDecided to join Lemmy after having issues with the Reddit app and Relay not getting along. Facebook groups as of late have been flaming garbage. Twitter is now an… X. I’m not touching Reddit again unless Google sends me there. Sync seems to do the job quite well.
I’ve tried Mastodon before. It just wasn’t my cuppa. This is my new public facing social home I think.

You’re not wrong. I was so desperate to get online as a kid I was pirating my neighbor’s internet on my Nintendo DS with a borrowed copy of the browser, because that was the only hardware I had with wifi access lmao.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What are some examples of cute as a look for men/masculine folks?
2·3 years agoFunny you should mention those. I actually purchased my first one not too long ago! I’ve never been a fan of floral patterns, but the retro/neon revival has helped with that somewhat.

Android@lemdro.id•Automatically turn off cellular when on wifi?English
7·3 years agoI remember this feature being removed around Android 9 or 10ish. Possibly. However, you could always use Tasker. Someone even built a convenient profile you can import.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What are some examples of cute as a look for men/masculine folks?
3·3 years agoOne of the reasons I prefer the colder months. It’s so much easier for me to look nice in warm clothes. Layers tend to be eye catching, and it’s nearly impossible to layer up in the summer months here without nearly expiring from heat exhaustion.

It’s also a naturally busy time for living organisms in the northern hemisphere. I’ve just got things going on, man.
