I don’t disagree with that but what about the people that are not connected to information like we are? What about the average Joe that is asked for an Instagram account so that he can get the contact of a person promising a job? (Just a random example).

Yes, social media is the problem. But there are two social media spheres. The one where we are, with Lemmy and Mastodon, is not the problem. The problem is the social media that exists in the capitalist world. What happened with the internet is that we invented a lot of services that should be a human right but they are controlled by corporations. Everyone should have access to a zero knowledge email, everyone should have access to a social media platform that is not controlled by anyone (it’s a public space).

Thank you, I have been looking at some of these but there are some there I haven’t checked. However, these all sound like complicated services to convince my family to switch. Something like Proton seemed perfect since it looked easy to use and I could easily explain that instead of “all your google services” here are (almost) all equivalent services on Proton here.

My take on the Linux “ban” is that it probably was intended to be a soft shadow ban (but something went wrong) on free software and open source alternatives. These companies are at the top, they now have the money and the government, there is only one thing that can bring them down: the people. It’s as simple as just deactivating or deleting your facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Google accounts (talking to those with an account). There was life before them, there was internet before them and there are alternatives (we are using one right now). Yes, there are a lot of benefits to using these platforms but what’s gonna be? Continue to fuel these companies by complaining about them and their CEOs and Trump, on their platforms, or leave and stop being part of the problem?

yap I’m exactly on the same boat. I am testing the waters with proton to leave google… and then I see this… Can’t find an alternative
