My home server has a 12 year old cpu, and that bad boy just keeps chugging along running 24/7.
I feel like I’m the only one that remembers that incognito mode was only ever about keeping your browsing history private on the local machine, not anonymizing all your internet traffic.
I switched from bash to zsh a while ago, mostly just for shits and giggles. I really can’t see any reason to form a strong opinion on it one way or the other.

World News@lemmy.world•Former Trump adviser says Russia offered U.S. free rein in Venezuela in exchange for UkraineEnglish
24·4 days agoAnd what could Russia possibly do to stop the US from doing whatever they want in Venezuela?
I feel like when non-golfers hear “golf course”, they are always picturing the hyper-exclusive, PGA level courses that are the domain of rich douchebags, and assuming that all courses are like that. In reality, there’s way more cheap 9 hole courses where you can play half a round for $20.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•3.5" floppy disks were peak tactile feedback in storage: easy to stick in, drives had a button to immediately eject them, big enough to get labels, thin enough that stacks didn't take too much space
7·8 days agoI kind of wish that something along the lines of the old PCMCIA format had survived. Flat, stackable, big enough for easy labelling, and these days could easily fit many terabytes of flash storage.

101·17 days agoIt’s like you learned all the words, without managing to learn a single one of the meanings. Oh well. I’m sure you’ll get there some day.
I’m wondering if they got France and Germany mixed up. I don’t remember all the French I was taught growing up, but it didn’t sound right. So I googled it and got “droigts” and “orteils” for “fingers” and “toes”.

News@lemmy.world•Trump says US will keep or sell oil seized from Venezuela
6·21 days agoIsn’t privateering still done by a privately owned ship? Pretty sure when government vessels do it, it is just a blockade/sanctions enforcement/etc, until someone declares war about it.

Linux@programming.dev•I made the switch last night and am still a bit shocked at how well it went
6·21 days agoFor Corsair RGB, there’s also OpenLinkHub. Supports pretty much everything Corsair now.
True, but I will not tolerate apps that engage in that kind of shitty behavior. Makes me think that they are farming my data. Why else would something like a grocery list app give two shits about whether or not I used it.
I hate to have things in my pockets, so I don’t carry anything more than the absolute essentials of keys, phone, and wallet. I count on one hand where I needed access to a knife when I didn’t have one, and that was only because I forget to put it back into my tackle box after sharpening it.
The problem comes when the app has an actual useful purpose for notifications, but it also chooses to send this type of bullshit. So I allow notifications, and immediately uninstall any app that abuses that permission.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Carney names ex-Blackrock executive as new US ambassador

Canada@lemmy.ca•Carney names ex-Blackrock executive as new US ambassador
28·22 days agoHow much power do you think an ambassador has? Especially the US ambassador. Ambassadors to other countries may hold significant sway, as the rest of the government may be relying on the ambassador for knowledge and recommendations on affairs relating to that country. For the ambassador to the US, the whole government, and a good chunk of the general population is already paying very close attention to the US. The ambassador is just a messenger.

AntiTrumpAlliance@lemmy.world•some epstein files can be unredacted...The Trump administration is so bloody stupid they just highlighted the text in black in the pdfs, leaving all the text available underneath.English
49·22 days agoThis screams malicious compliance to me. A lot of the staffers who would actually be doing this work are not elected officials doing this kind of work for the first time, and there would absolutely be strong guidelines on how to properly redact something.

1·23 days agoI prefer to think that this post is unrealistically optimistic. If you drive an electric car and live in Quebec, this could very well be true. For reference, Quebec’s electric grid is just about 100% hydroelectric power, so your driving emissions would be close to 0.
I honestly feel bad for anyone who has to learn English as anything other than their first language. I don’t know if there’s any other languages where there are so many exceptions to every rule of pronunciation, spelling, and grammar.

They aren’t calling Steam “the devil of DRM”. The title is a list of three separate topics discussed. They spoke about competition with Steam, then with a separate question, they spoke about DRM.
