We have a bunch around Chicago too. There are two zones around where I live that have them, and in both places people absolutely do slow down now. There might be a catch-22 for the city in terms of on-going revenue though—once people learn to slow down in those areas, I would imagine ticket revenue from those cameras drop. But saving lives is never a bad outcome.

I’ve seen headlines where some CEO (usually in tech) had the self-awareness to tell their workforce that AI is coming for everyone’s jobs, “including mine.” So at least some of them know it.

Sure why not

1. It’s 2025, is there even a browser that doesn’t reopen your tabs by default? Who are the criminals building those?
2. Keeping a zillion tabs open is a resource strain on classic computers. If people are up for it, they could explore saving tabs to stuff like task apps or bookmark services.

Whoa whoa whoa with “they” here. It was like a couple hundred intrepid and possibly more brave than smart swimmers. The rest of us Chicagoans were perfectly fine watching them be (wet) guinea pigs.

I don’t watch Kimmel. Nothing particularly against him I’m just not that into late night shows. But the real test here will be whether he’s been gagged from specific topics and people.

You might be surprised at how well indie publications can do. Look at Second Wind, they have a bunch of writers and video folks all funded AFAIK through Patreon.

SkillUp’s channel has done so well he’s hired on two more people to make videos and just launched their own site with multiple writers. In fact they just hired another columnist, all reader and viewer funded through Patreon (and directly through the site too, I think).

There are other outlets thriving in the indie gaming journalism and review space too, all most if not entirely reader funded. It’s working.
