  • He fought for information to be free by pirating JSTOR papers, and he was persecuted and prosecuted for it, and he killed himself (or did he? [vsauce music]).

… And now we have SciHub. Which is the same exact fucking thing as what he was trying to accomplish.

Also he was instrumental to the invention of the RSS protocol:

As a programmer, Swartz helped develop the web feed format RSS; the technical architecture for Creative Commons, an organization dedicated to creating copyright licenses; and the Python website framework web.py.

The same RSS protocol that spez completely killed off a few months ago. Aaron’s grave has been shat on so many times that it’s basically a latrine now. But the people who say “fuck spez” know none of this, and if they do, they’re cowards for not saying it out loud.

Peak lemmy lmfao. You know this site is dogshit so you know that without something even worse to serve as the comparison, you’re fucked beyond hope. “Honestly, as much as I’d like to see Hitler disappear, we do need him around to make this country look good.” aah take. Come the fuck on. Can you use logic that’s internally consistent for FIVE MINUTES?!

Instead of saying “fuck spez” like a drone, pivot to saying “remember Aaron” (so that people who don’t know about him can learn something new)

The fediverse LARPs so much about being inclusive and diverse but you’re constantly betraying your tribal nature. Own it. If you’re on the Good People Team, prove it with more than empty, hateful accusations OR substantiate those accusations beyond in-group signaling.

Because this place is fundamentally the same echo chamber as reddit, and it faces the same peer pressure. The only thing that changes is the handle on the usernames, and the only way to be different is to completely ignore the upvote system and say what you actually think instead of what you expect other people to upvote you for (good job, you let your own mind regress to the mean).

Unless your thoughts are as shallow as your words… are they?

  • Literally any centralized service that advertises privacy is either a honeypot or it’s going to become one eventually, as soon as the feds knock on the door of whoever hosts it.

Italy had Autistici/Inventati and Trump decided to declare them a terrorist organization and to threaten debanking. That’s what happens to anyone who doesn’t comply with the surveillance state. And apparently Trump has extrajudicial power over vassal states because why not? The entire world is a LARP. People have morals and values and ethics right up until Visa and Mastercard say “no”; then they’re revealed for who they always were…

Girls will sooner filter you out for not being tall enough than for smelling. If you smell but you’re their phenotype, they just call it musk. Anything is possible when you argue in bad faith. Now go work on yourself some more, possibly for a few years; and as far away from me as possible, while I flirt with someone I liked at first sight.

  • These are all the US and Chinese backdoors being finally discovered and everyone is in a panic when they should be celebrating lol Good. Bring the corporate internet down, it was better when it wasn’t full of normies and post-iPhone users anyway. When the demographics skewed technical and not performative. And bring the banks down too please. I literally don’t give one shit if the world burns because it’ll burn cooler than this hell we’re already subjected to. For once, we have a chance to enact change that isn’t “just vote lmaoo i’m so smart! i’m radical chic!” so bring it on

  • Social engineering is stupid people being stupid and then being surprised that their stupidity has consequences. Unless physical coercion is involved, like in the xckd comic about the wrench, then education is the fix here. I got my account stolen in Habbo once when I was a kid and I was never scammed again in my life.

You’re basically arguing that since people can burn themselves on the stove, that stoves are not as safe as ovens and that ovens are preferable. That’s bullshit, getting burnt is part of learning to respect the technology.

You’re the reason all those toys like Mattel’s VAC-U-FORM got castrated because some stupid kid got burnt once and the mom went nuclear, cucking all the other kids who wanted to learn how industrial manufacturing actually works.

I don’t need an institutional daddy to safeguard me from the consequences of my own actions. I need the floor to be there so I can smash my face on it and update my priors.

  • You joke but that logic actually makes the original phrase kinda moot now that I think about it. Because on the one hand you’re right, you need to understand hate to practice it. But on the other hand there’s no need to hate yourself in order to hate someone else. For example a victim of a violent crime has no need to hate themselves and is morally justified in hating their aggressor. So by that logic, there’s also no intrinsic need to love yourself in order to love others either. Surely loving yourself would make you more experienced at loving others but it’s not really a prerequisite like the phrase wants to make it…

What is being discussed uses language that was decided by the same DSM that up until a few decades ago labeled homosexuality as a mental illness and caused Turing to be chemically castrated with the same estrogen that trans people line up for today, and then to kill himself over the violation of his bodily autonomy, and then to be stamped on £50 bills as a retroactive apology. That’s what’s being discussed.

Language is used to pathologize people for seeing things objectively. Systemic critique gets converted into personal failure. If you look at how the anglosphere operates through language you’ll realize that 99% of English serves the grammatical purpose of shifting the blame downwards and to pathologize people with thought-terminating clichés that imply that their own “free will” (which can’t be proven to exist and which the elite doesn’t believe in) is the root of their problems. Not the material conditions. But your reaction to them. Obviously. Because it’s never material conditions created by a person who can be punched, it’s always something wrong with you specifically. And with an ever-increasing proportion of the world population, apparently. The rise of depression is proof that the therapist class is doing a shit job at healing people, mostly because if they heal you they can’t pay their mortgage anymore; and besides it’s not like they can actually fix capitalism so they just sell you copium and tell you that you should be glad to be huffing it.

So in conclusion: why does everything suck? Because language is captured so thoroughly that you can’t even express the plain truth that your eyes observe without being categorized as something that can be used to reduce you to a manageable stereotype. So you internalize the stereotype and wonder why the cognitive dissonance you’re feeling hurts so much, and then you’re billed hourly to cope with it.

In order to succeed and be happy you don’t need therapy, you need lawyers who can litigate semantics and threaten people until they give up and leave you alone. Impunity is happiness for the untouchable.

  • Well you didn’t add any caveats to the transformation and you said it’s at will so… If mass is not conserved then I’d just turn into something heavy yet compact like a rhino and harvest infinite energy from the toggling. If I get support from a State I might even choose a whale so we can extract the most energy per toggle. You can basically build an engine from it, and since whales are like 200 tons and I’m 70kg, the conversion ratio would be pretty damn good. Though it would require a dedicated facility, which is why I’d rather go with a rhino or something, which is however about 100 times less efficient so it would require 100 times as much toggling. You get the picture.

Wikipedia is and has always been shit. It’s where institutions go to write down their propaganda so it sounds authoritative. In fact it’s the precursor to AI in that sense. It’s credentialism all the way down. If something is said somewhere by anyone, then it becomes a source. Unless that source is not approved of installed by the powers that let wikipedia gracefully host its websites.

If a page regarding a political or historical event isn’t under constant scrutiny, state actors and “trolls” will gradually alter it until it says nothing conclusive at all. Everything must be up in the air, everything must be “neutral” (when language itself is political…)

Also think about the incentives. You’re a government. You have people working full time to redact history. You CAN and you WILL threaten people who write the wrong version of history. This is not even hidden, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Wikipedia–U.S._government_conflicts

They can see it happening, they can document it happening, and they can’t do shit to change it because they’re not a peer to peer project. Like the fediverse for that matter, it’s all vulnerable to the same exact “a guy in a suit rang your doorbell because the server is on your premises” tactic.

So in conclusion, believing that “wikipedia good” and “AI bad” is an incredibly naive way to understand the world. Read up on Wittgenstein and Sapir-Whorf and tell me how this isn’t literally their theories being implemented.
