Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Considering the fact that a lot of the Reddit mods are also Lemmy mods, what would be the mechanism to remove abusive mods here?English
4·15 hours agoIt is more that there are fewer people who are more like-minded.
If Lemmy were to get larger, moderation would become more required.

1·15 hours agoIt depends on the instance admins.
Also, you’ve had mod abuse, now you can have admin abuse here.

31·15 hours agoThe USA “won” the War of 1812 the same way it won the American War of Independence, paying to maintain control wasn’t worth the gains of maintaining control.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Private colleges argue potential harms of 4-year community college degreesEnglish
6·15 hours agoThere are only three public universities that offer bachelor’s degrees in Iowa. Community colleges would absolutely increase the competition as community colleges could offer degrees closer to where people live.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Have anyone here actually published a memoir or know of someone IRL (as in, you've met them face to face) that published a memoir? Do people actually read these?English
3·1 day agoA grandparent did before they died. I read it; it was ok.
The issue with Colbert is that economics is part of the reason why CBS cancelled the Late Show.
I’m sure that getting rid of the show to give Trump a favor was a plus, but late night television has seen audiences drop for decades. It is made even worse as video podcasts are taking up a lot of the role that late night talk shows used to take and are now popular enough that they are giving out awards for them.
I also don’t think that Paramount was as strategic about Colbert as Disney was with Kimmel or NBC is with Fallon. Disney commonly uses Kimmel as a way to promote other Disney IP. NBC now uses the Tonight Show as an extension of SNL to promote writing talent before they move on to different shows. In contrast, Colbert doesn’t really have any big clips with Star Trek actors.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do I deliver an American eBay package to my hotel?English
2·2 days agoSo, there are people telling you how to ship packages to a hotel, which is fine. The issue is going to be if eBay will let you. Having packages sent to a hotel is likely going to trigger a lot of fraud warnings, especially as your account is from another country.

31·3 days agoThe Korean and Vietnam Wars were constrained by not trying to turn the Cold War hot. Also, Vietnam was as much about nation-building as it was fighting an enemy.
The invasion of Grenada met all military objectives.
The Gulf War was such a success that it changed war doctrine for those choosing to fight the USA after.
The USA intervention into Somalia fell apart as the government the USA supported collapsed.
The USA intervention into Yugoslavia got Serbia to withdrawal troops from Kosovo.
The Afghanistan War successfully toppled the previous Taliban government, the USA just couldn’t build a new government to replace the existing one.
The USA toppled Saddam Hussein rather quickly after the Iraq War; the current government is wildly different in form from the old one.
The USA successfully kidnapped the Venezuelan President.
Most of the USA’s war losses were due to attempts to nation-build. If the USA chooses not to nation-build, it can launch major military attacks to disable opponents. In those fights, the USA dominates.
The kind of person that Trump is isn’t an abberation, but the oligarchs were expecting more of a Reagan instead of Trump.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What should we be doing, individually, to increase Lemmy's userbase?English
1·3 days agoDon’t.
I don’t think that the current structure is set up for growth. The devs have stated that they don’t see preparing for growth as a priority and we haven’t seen the kind of mod tools needed for a larger audience.
I also don’t see an onboarding process that has been created to explain to new users how a Federated Lemmy is different from Reddit.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do corporations really do research?English
3·4 days agoLarge corporations, especially those related to tech, will generally have a research arm of some form performing university level research. Outside of attempting to use the research to argue that their companies aren’t a harm to society, the research is generally legit.
The corporations generally do it to stay competitive. In the near term, research can be used to create patentable technology and new products. In the long term, the research can give an idea on what can be technically achievable in the future, allowing companies to increase their predictive capabilities.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Engineer caused data loss by cleaning PCs with welding toolsEnglish
6·5 days agoAs an engineer, a lot of engineers do a lot of dumb stuff.
Part of it is that a lot of engineers don’t think through the implications of their design. Part of it is that a lot of engineers coast by on the equivalent of copying other people’s code. Part of it is that budgets for projects are so compressed that you need a high performer to get it done on budget and getting that high performer in this case isn’t always viable. Part of it is that you need someone smart enough to do the job and dumb enough to not go for a higher pay position in another field.

7·5 days agoEh, I’ve seen collaboration tank due to full WFH. People don’t talk to each other, which means they aren’t asking each other questions or coordinating with others on projects. It also pushes managers to become a bottleneck as individual workers don’t form informal connections with each other to ask for help.
Also, people are a lot nastier to each other when they are outside of punching distance.

Everything else I wouldn’t blink at, but I would wonder what kind of places Dad likes to party at.
