I am now wondering how long the wax I am using takes to dry. It said 5-10 mins but that could be specifically for a very thin surface cover. At work now but I might poke the wax still in the groves when I am home and its had hours to dry. Perhaps some of the problem is wiping it too early and the thicker layers need more time.

What counts as fighting climate change? The last UK government did several things to help. They could have done more but they could have also done less. UK emissions have dropped pretty significantly per capita.

Not sure how easily that would apply. Black/dark brown crayon/beeswax could be something to try. Not sure how easy it would be to remove it if some ends up in the wrong place. Might be OK to sand it off.

Deliberately burning the wood is an interesting idea

Carving through the oil is the idea. It seems like wax on bare wood is darker than wax on oil. So the oil that remains in the uncarved parts would reduce how much the wax sticks there, but not in the carved parts.

Clear waxing before carving sounds like it is probably similar oiling before carving. But I don’t have clear wax, just the Danish oil. Both presumably leave a protective layer in the uncarved areas that reduce how much of the coloured wax sticks there in comparison.
