Before my appendix surgery, I remember pointing at one of the monitors and asking “Have you got Eurosport on one of those?”. I don’t remember getting any answer.

Oh, now that you mention these countries, it all makes sense. True. I have overheard a couple of British youngsters (read: ~20-25 yo) recently, and they talked about their weight in stones and whatnot. It’s weird because you can buy beer by the pint, but milk by the litre.
I usually add context for this exact reason. You get lazy once, and there you go.
That’s admirable! I looked it up in translate and got a completely different result. I think I know what was going on : ) 🦃
Haha, sorry, I’m not even native. We spell it like that. I think it’s only the French and the Brits (also because of the French) spelling them like metre or litre.
But yeah, I gave it away regardless.
I think we can - but just see how many people in your country call Turkey Türkiye (they made a request back in 2022) - and that was just one country, not all.
My first thought was that you’d appreciate it more every decade.
It’s like calling the entire country of the Netherlands Holland. Holland(ia?) is part of the Netherlands which gave the name of the country in a bunch of languages.
This is weird, by the way, I just wrote about the exact same thing not too long ago.
This always reminds me of our karate master back when I was going to trainings. One day his instruction was “one mawate zurück”. We don’t normally speak any of these languages.
I used to work at this kiosk which was inside a café. A customer wanted to pay from the inside, which can happen, but it’s rare. Since the reader was cable wired to the plug at the window, I had to bring it to where he was standing, but the cable wasn’t long enough. I pulled it out as much as I could, and waited for him to step forward and reach out with his card in his hand.
He was just standing there, waving his card at the machine from ~3-4 feet away. Like, I don’t know, at one point the card reader would go “HEY, that card is Larry! Hi, Larry, how are you doing, you old sonofabitch?”
You know this content was brought to VeryBritishProblems by a spy when they talk about tea and CENTIMETERS.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Would you take pills that stop you from caring about the state of the world?
5·5 days agoIn my opinion the world is at this shitty state exactly because so many people just don’t care and turn a blind eye to so many injustices, awful things happening in the world. You can ignore the smell of smoke coming from the neighbour, but enough sitting around will just get your roof on fire, as well. Even if the fire avoids you, you could easily be the person burning inside while the neighbour is just “taking their pills”, not caring about the state of the world.
Had more people cared, we wouldn’t see the same atrocities as back in and around WW2, Fascist states and semi-dictatorships running wild without anyone stopping them, white men oppressing minorities, etc.
So they will be just called snakes.

The proportional amount of people who happily support these regimes, and/or don’t care… I have doubts.

3·7 days agoThat’s a fine summary there, thanks. I don’t think #2 would be a real threat: it’s a bit like if Instagram wanted to sue Facebook because it also has a “follow” button. I totally understand the rest, and either is more than enough reason. Well, I hope they get there once, though.

The more offended this demented narcissistic fascist feels, the more unhinged he gets. He moved on Venezuela for a reason, as well. We definitely shouldn’t just watch this madness and do nothing. But if he sees that the rest of the kindergarten forms an alliance leaving him out, moreover, doing it against him, his fragile ego will shatter again, and he will start throwing mud at everyone.
Except what he has is not mud but the planet’s strongest army.
