We have clay soil here, honestly I could put koi carp out in the lawn and they’d be quite happy out there.
I was thinking, maybe I could grow rice or something instead as a 2nd income…
I agree that Linux phones would be an alternative, but they’re not going to get there by the September deadline.
Open Android development will need to continue for another (vague handwaving) 5 years yet

4·3 days ago3 months…
My knee popped around Christmas time (alcohol induced injury)… thought it was getting better… went to a friend’s birthday party last weekend… had alcohol… it’s hurting again.
Ought to go I 'spose.
Mind you… I still have a weird patch of skin that changed colour when I had Covid, maybe they need to see that first…

9·3 days agoWe have a ZzZ script which slowly turns off the TV and lights.
It works from one end of the house through the kitchen, then lounge, then up the stairs, the idea is it follows me to bed turning off things as I’m walking…
A separate script tells me that it’s time for bed (as I find finishing the day difficult).
<insert Monty Python sketch about haggling>
As a contractor, I’d be paying myself minimum wage and everything else would be “tax efficient”, so that’s what, ~£12 soon… so… you’d be better off if I bought you a pint 😉

This would be local only so they can up/download ebooks here and share with the family - when they’re here.
Thanks

3·5 days agoSo… if my SO is buying ebooks from the Kobo store, can they upload to Calibre (etc) and then someone else can download it?
They read a heap of books and want to share them with their family… who are on Kindles, with that DRM nonsense (boooo)
You know…
I’ve just deleted the “no, that won’t work” response I started writing… I still don’t think I’d actually do it, but, you’ve got me thinking about it now.
Triple my income, no office politics, just rake it in until I retire… hmmm…
Last week was my first full week back at work after recovering from this weird cold / flue that’s going around.
You know… after almost 30 years working for the same company (in different roles), I’m not sure I want to stay there any more.
No similar jobs nearby - or they’re paying 50% less… but… I’m just not feeling like dealing with the daily crap anymore.
It’s a bit unsettling…
On your last point, have a look at the Ikea sit-stand desks, I have one and it’s been working well for… ~10years? (& they’re cheaper than some others)
There’s no way I could concentrate / be on video calls and walk though, so I’m not sure about the treadmill…

41·10 days agoGet an SSH tunnel working first.
That’ll find all the problems poking holes through home routers, dynamic public IPs, etc.
Once you’ve got that part running, then you can look at VNC or… and hear me out… I just run the X11 apps remotely. So I’m opening their apps on my laptop, changing the config for their session and it’s done.
I reconfigured Thunderbird that way when we moved email providers foe the family’s email.
No need for VNC to transmit all their screen when just the app is needed 😉
Yeah, I agree… I want (and have) a NAS… and a separate Server.
The NAS is a NAS, not a TrueNas running my firewall, making coffee and keeping the house warm.
I also agree with OMV for someone starting out. I stuck with it until it got a little too containerised for my own liking and ended up building my NAS out of standard Arch because I now knew what features I wanted.
And my Proxmox is on a passively cooled small, silent, box in my home office. It will be upgraded to Incus on plain Arch one day because, again, I now know what features I want / don’t want.
For OP, try things, break things, try other things… just make sure you have backups 😉

2·11 days agoThankyou. For some reason thst just made me laugh and I’ve had a shit day… so thanks 🙂

Had a weird week…
We had a load of work done on the house years ago due to nextdoor’s house burning down and almost taking ours with it, but, our insurance sorted out a load of stuff… however… years later it turns out, if you try to put fresh paint on the walls, the previous paint just bubbles up and peels off.
So… after screaming at the walls in 1 room last year, I got a pro in to finish off the rest of the house…
This week he had to strip large chunks of paint back to bare plaster, let it all dry out and then basically build it all back up again.
We now have another fresh magnolia room instead of a grubby, slightly mouldy room.
But, seeing what the poor guy has to go through (when I drop off his coffee) to get each of these rooms done, man, hats off to skilled professionals.
Oh, and one of my best engineers told me he’s applied for another job… no gripes with anyone wanting to improve their career, but man, I’m in trouble if he goes as the rest can’t do what he does.
