Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the most interesting or unbelievable thing you've seen with your own eyes?
6·7 hours agoSpace shuttle launches. I’ve seen basically every one that’s happened in my lifetime since I grew up like 30 miles from Cape Canaveral, we’d watch the initial launch on TV then run outside to watch the shuttle rise over the trees in the yard. The solid rocket boosters glow and you could see them separate and fall back down.
The first time I drove out to the coast to watch as an adult my friend and I were sitting along the intracoastal and some dolphins came up to say hi while we were waiting.
My mom had a manager who didn’t have fingerprints. When the bank they worked at implemented fingerprint login on the computers it caused a few problems.

1·21 hours agoTeleroboxer was kinda cool too, I played it briefly on the 3ds but I didn’t really want to spend the time to get decent at it.

2·22 hours agoI’m not sure I was clear with that point - it is wrong due to the sentence fragments, but my native-English-speaker Spidey senses tell me there’s something else wrong with it too, but I don’t know what.
I’m not sure it’s the only piece of the list though, this is an out of context picture and my first guess is it’s from a children’s book and the next pages list out more things. I could be completely wrong on that guess but I came to these comments looking for context, nobody has provided it yet, and I don’t care enough to find out, lol. Edit: not a children’s book with that font. I don’t know and I’m slightly buzzed because I’m off tomorrow and had a beer, sorry.

Technology@lemmy.world•Preserving The Web Is Not The Problem. Losing It Is.English
5·22 hours agoSometimes I wonder what the prevalent response to AI would be if we lived in a better world? There are environmental and resource concerns, but I think if they weren’t desperately trying to shove it everywhere to make a profit I’m not sure those would be unmanageable.
Information still wants to be free, but the way corporations are actually using AI right now in our economic hellscape punches people much lower in the (Maslow’s) hierarchy of needs.

4·23 hours agoI’m a US native speaker and that semicolon is weird. Most people couldn’t fully tell you the rules around semicolon use and often use it wrong in various ways (iirc it’s mostly supposed to be used with two full grammatically complete sentences that you could use something else between them but they’re connected in some way so the semicolon is used to indicate that, it’s rare). But the semicolon in the meme is weird in ways I can’t put my finger on - the sentence fragments are a common enough thing that it doesn’t flag as wrong to me, but there’s more than that. Why not use a colon (:), if this is maybe the first of a list in a kids book or something?

I’d love to figure out some improvement to CoMaps cycling directions, although I’m starting to use it more as a digital map and doing my own route planning. Both CoMaps and Google make some bizarre routing choices but this is a place where Co Maps has space to really excel. Co Maps might already be slightly better in some regards but Google is usually workable and CM’s route is 90% better and 10% baffling utter nonsense. The goog has absolutely been responsible for multiple occasions where I’ve said fuck no and ended up riding on the sidewalk though.

News@lemmy.world•ICE pursuit ends in multi-car crash in St. Paul’s Cathedral Hill neighborhood
3·6 days agoYou’d think but ICE has been really active in the Midway neighborhood of St Paul and recently they’re in the suburbs due to less housing density so less resistance when they do show up.

News@lemmy.world•Federal authorities announce end to Minnesota immigration crackdown
2·6 days agoAccording to Reddit, they announced this while harassing kids at bus stops.
Press X to doubt.
What worries me is that Reddit has basically hidden the Minnesota subreddits from all, the mainstream media has been reporting a lot less, and I’m guessing the other oligarch social media is also hiding what’s going on - are they going to keep doing this but silence us so the normies outside Minnesota think it’s ended?
According to the other thread it is the opening scene of Silicon Valley, or half of it is at least. It’s a shitpost that doesn’t belong in this community.

4·8 days agoI was a fairly young teenager when I saw Starship Troopers for the first time, it was a TV edit with that scene and a couple others removed (in hindsight it’s a bit shocking how little they had to cut for TV). Years later my family was staying in an RV park and we were looking though the campground DVDs and they had that movie available so I suggested we watch it. And nearly died of embarrassment at that scene, lol.
I wonder if that counts those of us who watched it after the fact on the official YouTube posting?

77·10 days agoThe folks up at Whipple here in Minneapolis have been chucking dildoes at ICE and local law enforcement. Helps that one of the major spots for local resistance is a sex toy store, and they’ve got a lot of “expired” dildoes around.
(If you see reports of “objects” thrown at fascists, it’s not chunks of ice anymore, lol.)

News@lemmy.world•‘A harmful barrier’: new Florida law mandates all driving tests to be offered in English only
4·11 days agoAnd most of Florida, even the major cities, are extremely car dependent and sprawling. It’ll take decades to fix when they finally decide they need to.
A friend of mine also had an orange cat named Butters.
Can confirm, Butters was a menace.
