So, I indulged in a spot of rally last night, having not done any in a long while. I started in Assetto Corsa Rally, and then moved over to EA WRC. I can’t believe how much I was baffled by how janky the physics in EA WRC felt. I guess I’ve just been playing it for so long that I got used what the physics in EA WRC did and how to work around them. Safe to say, ACR is lightyears ahead in terms of car handling. Whilst it isn’t perfect by any means and still has a lot of work to do (it is still early access I guess), they are very much on the realistic end and you feel as though you can actually tell what the car is going to do/trying to do.
So this got me thinking, I installed the OG: Richard Burns Rally. I was absolutely blown away by the car physics and how the force feedback feels in that game. I really need to do a video about it. I played it a year or so ago, but since then there has been a major graphical update and extras to the game that it really continues to be a worthwhile contender.
My only gripes with RBR is the lack of realistic car sounds and a realistic damage mod, with the occasional weird flat look appearance of the graphics.
If you’re into rally games or sim racing, you really, really need to install this game and try it. After all, it is **completely free.**
RBR is the king and will remain king for a while. ACR is incredible but the barrier to entry for mods to compete with the quality of the official stages is extremely high. I’m not sure we’ll ever see as prolific a modding scene in ACR.
Who knows? RBR and ACR are both excellent. I’m just waiting for the ACR team to fix the throttle model as it’s abysmal with RWD cars.
The realism and detail of the stages in ACR is like nothing I’ve seen elsewhere. Every other game is just flat and like a ribbon. I guess that’s laser scanning for you!
I can’t personally say I noticed too much trouble with the throttle model in RWD (then again, I mostly main the Stratos and 037), what is it you think about it? Not saying you’re wrong, just curious
I also main the Stratos. It seems to be the best behaved out of all the RWD cars. The Alfa is abysmal though, which is a bummer because I love those old Alfas. It’s like the throttle response is exponential or something. It really feels like its all or nothing with a very tiny midrange. The Alfa on snow in Monte Carlo is undriveable because the throttle is so unpredictable. It should be easier to control the throttle compared to the Stratos but its the opposite.
Niels Heusinkveld has had a few good chats about it on his youtube channel, if you’d like to hear someone with credentials speak about it.
Have you tried Dirt Rally 2? It’s not without its faults, but imo, its still the best rally game out there.
I have, it was my go to before EA WRC came along. Honestly? Its not that its a bad game, but it leans more into the arcadey style of sim racing physics and that’s fine, but it’s not really my vibe.
Its a shame because some of the engine sounds from that game were the best of all time still to this day, imo. Not to mention having Welsh and Scottish stages! I miss those.
