I wanted more context than this article offered.

There is a lot of extra detail in the Wikipedia article.

The key background points were that this was for a psychology class and the essay’s topic was a research paper about gender typicality in middle school students. Ranting about trans people is pretty far off-topic, but there’s some wiggle room in the grading.

The key identity-related point is that the instructor is a trans gender grad student and originally gave her a zero. A cis gender person re-graded the essay and also gave it a failing grade, but apparently not a zero. The college is apparently only punishing the trans person, and is completely wiping out the grade for the essay, despite it being re-graded.

So, it seems this is not only about rewarding a student for writing mindless nonsense due to her Christianity. It’s also strongly about punishing the teacher simply because she is a trans woman.

Quoting the wiki, it’s worth noting:

Fulnecky’s mother is a lawyer who has previously provided legal defense for those who took part in the January 6 United States Capitol attack.

Canadian anti-trans activist Billboard Chris responded by saying that being transgender should result in a person being “automatically disqualified from holding any position as teacher or professor”, to which Fulnecky’s mother agreed, saying that she was proud of her daughter

For anyone who wants a more entertaining analysis, here’s a good vid going over what the student wrote

      https://youtu.be/xTxFSCKNAQU

It’s pretty much written devoid of any relation to the class or subject matter; pretty much a giant ‘let me sue you so I can grift for attention’ button any honest teacher is obligated to press.

to expound on that. we’re talking about a junior in a psychology major. It’s a science heavy major.

      She should know how to:

      • cite sources
      • Discern good sources from bad.
      • understand that the bible is not a good source for psychology.
      • know how to right a fucking essay and answer the question that was being asked.

There were all of two sentences relating to the article which she was supposed to talk about. Those two sentences were basically “I disagree with this article”.

Her only source- if you want to call it a source- was the bible. But she didn’t even bother cite specific parts of the bible, just waxed inelegantly about “traditional” gender norms and insisting that bullying people because they weren’t cisgendered is good. (which is what the article was about, IIRC, bullying of noncis kids in middleschool.)

(for people interested, Forest Valkai has a good break down on the essay, and why she failed

Grad Student has my sympathy, didnt do anything “wrong”, and is certainly the victim in this.

That said for anyone wondering, a general best practice is to notify your supervisor whenever you encounter something that may become a complaint.

“Hey this kid is trying to rage bait me, what do?”

The student deserved a grade of 0, but sadly it seems the grad student walked into this trap and unwittingly became the foot stool from whence this vapid bimbo will launch her Kirk career.

Let’s not forget that her mother is a right wing nutjob lawyer who seems to have been heavily involved in this incident. So, there is a strong nepo baby element here, as well.

The student herself seems like an incompetent loser who wouldn’t go anywhere on her own, so without her mommy’s pressure, I doubt she could have anything like a Kirk career.

In an interview she bragged about how she only spent a few minutes to sloppily put it together so she could go see a musical on campus or something. She admits that it was easy and didn’t require any effort in her part.

Yeah and I’ve never had a college level essay that could get full marks when put out in 30 minutes. An hour, sure, but you need to think, write, edit, and cite. That’s not “type it up snd send it out” speed

It’s stunning and embarrassing that this kind of behavior is rewarded with consideration. If you read the original assignment and the student’s submitted essay linked in the article, it’s very clear that the instructions were essentially disregarded. Giving credence to this obviously baited controversy limits the credibility of the University.

That American educational institutions are at this level of competence is surreal. I’ve seen more genuine and productive debates from high schoolers.

The problem is that’s brownie points in right wing circles. And once they start getting attention, the grift gear activates.

This probably won’t be the last time she gets on the news.

It was the point all along. Her mom defended January 6th insurrectionists in court, they went to the media before appealing the decision with the university. This was all planned. She’s not smart enough to write above a fifth grade level but she’s smart enough to get in on the grift.

I hope any and all graduates and current students sue to recoup the cost of their tuition bc OU just threw their reputation in the dumpster. While I am not directly involved in the hiring at my job, I have heard other managers talk about this before and now pretty much all OU applicants resume’s are headed to the shredder.

    Ugh. Disappointing, but not surprising.

The school I work at has lots of rules, but if you get your parents to call the Presidents office, you’ll get an apology from the school for asking you to follow them.
