No Stupid Questions@lemmy.ca•Are destruction and annihilation respectively homologous to elimination?
11·3 days agoIn some contexts eliminate would be violent and aggressive. If you eliminate a witness or eliminate competition it has a very different connotation to eliminating a bad habit for example.
Admittedly there can be variation in how people interpret word choice, but there are still differences between the two words.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.ca•Are destruction and annihilation respectively homologous to elimination?
2·3 days agoIt may technically be correct, but the connotation is different. Annihilate suggests more violence or aggression, where eliminate likely does not in that context.
Its word choices like this that make writing sound strange when people use a thesaurus to try to add variety or to make something sound ‘smarter’.
Certain word choices can be more emotionally loaded, more likely to provoke certain thoughts or associations.

3·3 days agoThere are some uses where eliminate would make sense and annihilate wouldn’t though. And vice versa. Like eliminating wasteful expenditures. Annihilate wouldn’t really work. So very similar words, but not a 1:1 substitution.
Yeah, I was just trying to point out the absurdity of trying to assign gender to either of them.
Most bees people think of are worker or queen bees (female) while the birds people tend to picture are bright and colorful (males) or the songs (also typically males). On the other hand people associate birds and egg laying (so I suppose femaleish) and bees have a stinger that could symbolize a penis (though if you have a barbed and venomous penis please stay far away from me).
So I vote you pick based solely on vibes instead of gender. Hell, I vote we take it a step further and stop gendering bathrooms at all. Just put random unrelated symbols and people can pick which they like. So like one with a book, the other with cheese. Or whatever else you want. Make it a big poop related social experiment.
Male bees don’t have stingers though…

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•(cant find the aita community) am i a bad person for saying "women" instead of "people who can get pregnant"?
171·10 days agoI mostly agree with this. Your word choice doesn’t have to be ‘perfect’ by some random definition of that. When a friend makes a request like yours did, as long as it seems reasonable, then I think its worth putting an effort into accommodating it however.
I tend to not be overly concerned with how random strangers think I should speak, but I want those around me that I care about to feel heard and cared about.
But…baklava…

5·20 days agoWe still have the cavalry, stetsons and all. Unless you mean like actual horse cavalry. The U.S. Army still maintains horses and stables. But the horses are mostly just for ceremonial/parade purposes.

I agree it would have been better the other way. People as batteries is really dumb.

I disagree. How it is reported on needs to change though. These things need reported, but not as serious or justified actions. The reporting needs to explain exactly why these calls are illegal, immoral, fucking cartoonishly evil. Name drop, call out the fascists. Journalists need to actually stand up for something.
Normalizing the fascists insanity needs to stop. The need to be unmasked, mocked, ridiculed.
