Did you ever play the SNES version? How would you describe the differences between the SNES and Gensis games? I know they’re totally different but I never played either.

Ah, ok. So it was intentionally trying to evoke the older artwork style. That makes a lot of sense, thanks for the clarification!

Also, !steampunk@lemmy.zip and !vampires@lemmy.zip . Doing my part to fight against the flood of news posts on Lemmy with wacky genre stuff.

3·9 days agoSo I will say that I think the videos posted so far seem to be an accurate representation of this game. It really is about 30% walking to the right, 30% platform-puzzles, and 30% combat. The game is visually gorgeous though so that isn’t a complaint; it’s an intentionally slow game.
I think I could get just as much enjoyment watching this game be played as I would playing it myself. Ultimately, whether I end up liking this game or not will depend on how the story goes. So far I’m intrigued, but they could take it in any number of different directions.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What movie feels impossible to watch without captions?English
11·10 days agoSometimes there are snippets in dialogue I’m not even sure you are supposed to hear them but you can still read them in the subtitles.
This is the big one for me. If I hear a character mumbling but the subtitles say “[incoherent mumbling]” then I don’t worry about it. But if i hear a character mumbling and the subtitles actually show me what they’re saying, I know the audience was supposed to have understood it.

3·17 days agoIn Graphene’s phone app, you can go to Settings -> Blocked Numbers, and enable “Numbers not in Contacts”. That will send any call from numbers you don’t have saved directly to voicemail. I still get the occasional voicemail message that’s just 2 seconds of silence (they didn’t hang up in time) but it stopped all spam calls for me.
If you can find a good source of that old shadowrun artwork I’d love to keep posting it here for all to enjoy… and as part of my devious scheme to keep this community active.

Cyberpunk@lemmy.zip•Where would you draw the line between cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk? (Do you think post-cyberpunk exists?)English
3·20 days agoAs someone who’s obsessed with cyberpunk (and thus this is entirely a “me” problem), I only see solarpunk as an unattainable dream; a goal. I understand it’s the desire for what the world should ultimately look like, but I don’t see how it’s a genre. That is, I feel like solarpunk is the epilogue, the “happily ever after”, but I don’t see how you can tell stories in this world. I can see how you can have a story that ends with the creation of this idylic world but I don’t know how you can tell a story that is set in this world and still have a conflict.
So from my ignorant view, I can see how solarpunk could be the world that is created once cyberpunk is defeated, but I don’t know if that makes it “post-cyberpunk”. I guess I would say, to me, solarpunk is “post-cyberpunk” in the same way Star Trek is “post-capitalism”. Not “post” as in genre, but “post” as in chronologically after. Sorry, I’m just rambling, I’ll stop now.

3·20 days agoDo you mean cyberpunk with the inclusion of magic? Shadowrun has been around since 1989. I’m not saying cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk can’t co-exist (we can still have cyberpunk works in a post-cyberpunk era) but I don’t think adding fantasy elements moves it past cyberpunk.
But to take your example of Warframe… maybe post-cyberpunk would include space travel? I would argue most classic cyberpunk stories stay on Earth (or low-Earth orbit) so maybe exploring the stars would be expanding the cyberpunk setting?

Cyberpunk@lemmy.zip•I find it strange that there's no Steampunk community on LemmyEnglish
3·1 month agoI think that’s what I find so strange. It’d be one thing if someone created a steampunk community and then just let it sit with zero posts, but for no one to even bother creating that community in the first place? It seems like no one actually cares about steampunk at all. And while I’m not a huge steampunk fan, I thought there were still some steampunk fans out there.

Cyberpunk@lemmy.zip•I find it strange that there's no Steampunk community on LemmyEnglish
3·1 month agoThat’s a very good point… Solarpunk has an entire ideology with various independent aspects that can each support their own communities, while steampunk is primarily an aesthetic. I know steampunk also has a heavily DIY mindset, but there isn’t much to discuss other than “here’s how I made a thing.” I wonder if that’s due to being a primarily “fantasy” genre for a world that can’t actually exist.
And I guess that’s what cyberpunk and solarpunk have in common… While they each have a unique aesthetic, they aren’t just an aesthetic. There are entire world views underpinning that aesthetic. One happens to be aspirational while the other is a warning, but they both provide lots to areas for discussion.
Huh, I hadn’t thought about that before, thanks! I always kinda viewed steampunk as cyberpunk’s little brother but cyberpunk actually has more in common with solarpunk. Neat!
Here’s a quick snippet from an interview with William Gibson in 2014:
“I was really fond of the film that I wrote and that Robert shot, but that wasn’t the film that Sony Image Works released. It’s a really extreme example of not being the director’s cut. It was written to be comic in its own way, and be a commentary on sci-fi films and how they are made. Keanu never played any of it straight because we didn’t want him to.”
So yeah, it sounds like Keanu’s performance was intentional but then the studio messed with the movie so much that his performance didn’t make sense anymore.
Doesn’t the movie start with him in like Singapore or something then he flies to Newark?

When did they move away from the skull logo? I expected the new logo on the SR4A version but I didn’t realize they’d already moved away from the skull logo in the original SR4.
